  2. 01: Demand The Construction Skills Network (CSN) provides market intelligence and insight for the UK construction industry. • Over 29,800 construction jobs expected in Scotland between 2014 and 2018, according to this year's Construction Skills Network report • Private Housing is the strongest sector, with large sustainable housing projects such as the £1.5bn Douglas Valley Owenstown development and the £1bn Winchburgh mixed use development scheme in the pipeline. • Some of the roles most need of new recruits in the next five years are: • 1,430 Non-construction professional, technical, IT, and other office-based staff • 590 Civil engineers • 400 Senior, executive, and business process managers • 110 Construction project managers

  3. 02: Changes to SQA National and Higher National Qualifications – from April 2014 National Certificate (NC) changes : 3 new Units • Civil Engineering Materials • Construction Technology: Groundwork's and Substructure • Construction Project Management: An Introduction 5 Revised Units • Computer Aided Drafting: An Introduction, • Health and Safety in the Construction Industry • Drawing for Construction • Modern Methods of Construction: An Introduction • Sustainability in the Construction Industry. A new Maths Unit has been developed 'Mathematics for Construction Technicians' at SCQF level 6. This is designed to allow more seamless articulation between awards.

  4. 02: Changes to SQA National and Higher National Qualifications – from April 2014 HND /D changes : • Geotechnics A & B - Moved from Options as regarded as a core subject area in Civil Engineering • Mathematics for Civil Engineering - Replaces Mathematics for Construction Engineering. • CAD 2-D – Now an optional Unit at the request of ICE. • CAD for Civil Engineering – Now an optional Unit at the request of ICE. • Construction Engineering and Structuring Engineering HN awards no longer available due to poor uptake. • Related units are now options within HNC / D Civil Engineering

  6. 04: public sector’s funding contribution for apprenticeships Skills Development Scotland (SDS) contract for Modern Apprenticeships, on behalf of the Scottish Government. Funding and Support is available to all employers , contributing to the costs of training and assessment for employees through an approved Modern Apprenticeship framework. The priorities for SDS funding decisions are in line with Scottish Government policy imperatives, and seek to contribute towards the following: • Maximising jobs with training opportunities for 16-24 year olds, with priority given to 16 to 19 year olds; • Maximising opportunities for the wider availability of higher level Apprenticeships including Technical Apprenticeships at SCQF Levels 8 and 9, and Professional Apprenticeships at SCQF Level 10 • For those aged 25 plus, priority for funding contributions will be given to the following occupational-related areas: Scottish Government key sectors such as construction and engineering For Civil Engineering Technician apprenticeships there are no age restrictions.
