  4. 1. Starting with yourself, what are the names of the people sitting in your row (or at your table)? Question 1

  5. 2. State your approximate height in metres. Question 2

  6. 3. How many years old do you think your teacher is? Question 3

  7. 4. Please rate your dislike of mathematics • A) Very weak • B) Weak • C) Moderate • D) Strong • E) Very strong Question 4

  8. 5. Which town do you live in? Question 5

  9. 6. Are you a morning person or a night person? Question 6

  10. 7. Would you rate yourself as: • A) Above average intelligence • B) Average intelligence • C) Below average intelligence? Question 7

  11. 8. How many siblings do you have? Question 8

  12. 9. How long did it take you to complete this survey? Question 9

  13. Names = Categorical, nominal • Height = Numerical, continuous • Age = Numerical, discrete • Dislike = Categorical, ordinal • Town = Categorical, nominal • Morning/Night= Categorical, nominal • Intelligence = Categorical, ordinal • Siblings = Numerical, discrete • Time = Numerical, continuous Types of Data collected

  14. Exercise 1A Categorical Data – Nominal or Ordinal? p5

  15. Exercise 1A Numerical Data – Discrete or Continuous? p5

  16. OK, we’ve collected the data. How do we best represent it? Frequency Distribution Table

  17. Frequency: The number of times something occurs eg. A particular piece of data Frequency

  18. This is a frequency distribution table  The question asks us to put the info into a bar chart…. ??????? Picture it in your mind then draw a rough one. What kind of data is this?

  19. Exercise 1A - Representing Categorical Data p6

  20. Let’s say you collect a whole heap of scores (n________ data) • It is sometimes convenient to put it into groups. • Can this be done with categorical data? Grouping Data

  21. Groups (also known as classes) are chosen by you! • It is just a range of numbers • Try and form between 5 and 10 classes for your data • Eg. What percentage signifies an A+ at WSC? What about a C? UG? What do groups look like?

  22. Spot the differences! I mean, compare and contrast…

  23. My favourite word for today: Polygon Another awesome word: Distribution

  24. Normal Distribution- most common score in the centre. Symmetrical. Skewed Distribution – look at where it has been dragged Bimodal distribution – Bi = two mode = score than occurs the most

  25. Summary Types of Data Representing Data

  26. Categorical • Nominal • Ordinal • Numerical • Discrete • Continuous Types of Data

  27. Bar chart • Eg. How do you represent Categorical Data?

  28. Histogram and Polygon • Eg. How do you represent Numerical Data? (Grouped and ungrouped)

  29. Text Book 1B – Q1, 4, 8, 12
