  2. Our Mission Statement • Bang! Bang, bang, the sound of a gun going off. They protect, but at the same time they still hurt. Guns. Mankind will never agree to get rid of guns entirely. But if we can’t get rid of them surely can make them a lot safer. Even with guns, we can make this world safe (safer) again. With our invention we can make the streets of neighborhoods with children and innocent bystanders safe once more. A parent will be able to sleep and not worry about his 8-year-old child finding his gun or any gun and being able to use it. Our invention works with the use of fingerprint recognition and technology and emotion chip sensors.

  3. Team Profile City: Pompano Beach State: Florida Team: SClub7 Team Project Facilitator: Mr. Mark Eyerman School: Blanche Ely High

  4. Team Assessment • Two of the team members, Melonie Martin and myself had done a project similar to this called Toshiba. This is a completely new experience for the other team member: Jasmine Ellison. But for all member on this team this has been an amazing experience. This project had us thinking outside the box. Through this project we became innovators in the vast world of technology. We all new the immense problems of this world, and yes at times we thought of the things we could do to make it better. But never in our life have we put our thoughts into such thorough practice.

  5. Team Members • Berloumiche Tanis: Team Leader/ PowerPoint Creator • Jasmin Ellison: Researcher • Melonie Martin: Inventor/ Drawer

  6. Berloumiche TanisTeam Leader/PowerPoint Creator

  7. My name is Berloumiche Tanis. I am currently a student at Blanche Ely High School. I am in the senior class of 2009 and am enrolled in the Pre-Med Magnet Program. I will attended University of Florida in the fall after being accepted to that along with University of Miami and Florida State University. I will major in Biology and/or Psychology in hopes of becoming a Pediatrician. I’m leader of this team and over this project because of my skills and it had to be done. I like to read in my spare and listen to music. I’m a very calm and down to earth type of person.

  8. Jasmin Ellison-Researcher

  9. Researcher • My name is Jasmin Ellison and I am a senior at Blanche Ely High School in the medical magnet program. After high school, I plan on going to the University of Central Florida to study psychology and one day become a pediatric psychiatrist. I enjoy volunteering with several organizations that help unprivileged children and giving my time to the community.

  10. Melonie Martin-Inventor

  11. Inventor/Drawer This is Melonie Martin. She is a senior at Blanche Ely, Class of 2009. Her interests are music and she enjoys music, favorite kind of music is music with emotion (rock). Some of her favorite movies are Happy Feet, Finding Nemo, Iron Man, and Footloose. And she likes to sing but really can’t. She will attend UF in the fall and will mostly likely major in Biology. She hopes to become a Pediatrician.

  12. Background Info • The first gun said to be dated to around 1290 A.D. and was found in the early 1970s at Pan-la-ch'eng-tzu village, Manchuria. The Chinese used the design of their primitive catapults to make a true gun. Their true gun had a metal barrel, gunpowder, and a projectile by the end of the the12th century. The invention of gunpowder came from China as well before 900 A.D. Gunpowder was discovered in China by accident; it was concocted by alchemists, seeking the elixir of immortality. (Silkroad, 2000)

  13. Background Con’t • The first revolver was invented and named after a guy named, Samuel Colt. The gun was called revolver because of its revolving cylinder “revolver.” In 1936 the U.S. gave Samuel the U.S. patent for his Colt revolver. The gun was equipped with innovative cocking device and the revolving cylinder, which contained 5 or 6 bullets. Bellis, M. (2009)

  14. Background Con’t • Guns were originally much bigger when they were first invented. Since then guns have gone through much modifications and become very small and capable of being held in the palm of the hand. Thus, the term hand guns.

  15. Problem • In today's crime filled society, there is an increased rate of gun violence. Everyday on the news, you hear of someone getting shot in an armed robbery or a school shooting or an innocent bystander being injured by a stray bullet. When guns were first invented, they weren’t intended for criminal activity; they were solely meant to be used as a defense mechanism. This problem is so important because innocent lives are at stake everyday, especially children. Children are getting their hands on guns inside the home because people are using these lethal weapons carelessly.

  16. Problem Con’t • If this problem goes unsolved more innocent lives will be lost. We as mankind must be responsible for what we create and the havoc it reeks on our society. This problem must be solved immediately. If so, we will have a more safe and secure environment. There will be no threats of gun violence in our communities. Parents will feel a sense of comfort and not have to constantly worry that their child will be shot at school or on their way home from school. This is a necessary change; this is a change America needs.

  17. Research & Investigation Present Solutions

  18. Present Solutions The use of guns has become overrated. It seems that nowadays anyone can get access to a gun. The problem is not entirely the gun itself, but keeping the in the hands of the person who purchased and it was intended for. Many guns go missing and are never recovered and are misused. The current technology that is being used to enhance gun safety is locks. But how reliable are they? If a person can break the locks on a front door they can break the locks on a gun or box containing a gun. There is no guarantee with the present technology for keeping guns safe.

  19. Present Solutions Con’t Another problem is how easily a gun can end up in the black market and in the wrong hands. And it is so easy to pull the trigger. Present technology is trying to sole that with a cable lock in the gun itself. This cable lock blocks the chamber to prevent a cartridge from being fired. The problem with this cable lock is that it can be cut. And you have trigger locks, which prevents the trigger from being pulled. That has its faults because older children and teens can still gain access to it. Not only that it doesn’t prevent theft and the lock can be easily broken. (WiseGeek, 2009)

  20. Present Solutions Con’t There are also lock boxes. But of course the combination or code can be figured out with a bit of persistence. There are serial numbers embedded in guns in order to be able to trace them. But that hasn’t been too effective. Often when a gun of a crime is found it is traced back to the person who purchased. However, in many cases the person who the gun is registered is not the person who used it and committed the crime. So the wrong person gets accused and punished.

  21. Research & Investigation • Design Ideas

  22. Design Ideas • Ideal #1 One solution to solving gun violence would be to ban guns completely. All of the guns outside the Military would be confiscated and destroyed. The only guns that will exist would belong to the police force and solely used as protection. However this gun will not have the power to kill anyone; only to harm them. This gun would be similar to today’s bebe gun. The bullets would be specially made not to penetrate the skin, although it might cause bruising. There will also be something called the green zone. This is a system where the guns can only be used in a certain range. Meaning, there will be guns specific to where a police officer is assigned to work. The gun will only work in that district and in the police stations. There will be a chip inside the gun that will allow the station to know if the gun has reached outside the green zone. If it has the gun will automatically lock up and the police officer will not be able to use it. In order for it to reactivate it must be brought back within the green zone. If the gun must be used outside the zone for emergency reasons only, the police officer would have to notify headquarters and they will be given a special code that can be entered into the gun and reactivate it.

  23. Design Idea’s Con’t • Ideal #2 Another solution would be to create a machine that police officers can use to automatically tell when someone has a gun. This would be made possible by embedding a sensor into all guns. When a police officer approaches someone they will be able to tell if they have a gun on them or not because this machine will detect the sensor. Once the machine detects the sensor it will inform the officer if the gun is legally registered to that person or was stolen. It will say the type of gun it is and its manufacturer. The machine will also be able to tell how much times the gun has been fired and the dates it was fired. If the use of the gun has ever been reported in a crime, the record will also show up on the machine. With this officers will be able to pinpoint any guns that are being illegally used.

  24. Design Idea’s Con’t • Ideal #3 Modifying the current guns with features that make guns safer. The researchers proposed a gun that can trace fingerprints, and is somehow computerized. And the researhers wanted to have the gun analyzed. The researchers wanted to make improvements on the modern gun. This gun will solve the problems presented by the current technology of guns. The handle of the gun features an emotion sensor. The trigger has a fingerprint detector, and a small computer screen on the side of the gun and a speaker

  25. Final Solution • The EmotronXL will be the best thing that will ever happen to the future. The EmotronXL solves the problems presented by the current technology of guns. The handle of the gun features an emotion sensor. The trigger has a fingerprint detector, and a small computer screen on the side of the gun and a speaker. All of the features if the gun are connected and work together.

  26. Solution cont. Many times when a person shoots gun they are acting on emotion, mostly anger. There emotion prevents them from thinking clearly. With the EmotronXL it can detect and analyze the emotional state of person. When a person holds the gun the emotion sensor on the gun goes off.

  27. Solution cont. The emotion sensor on the EmotronXL reads the pressure the person has the gun and sends a message to the computer of the gun. The gun shows the levels and lock the gun. the speaker reads the levels and tells the person they are unable to use the gun due to their emotional state. only the person who the gun is registered to can use it. If someone else tries to use it the scanner scan their fingerprint and analyzes it. Inside the gun is a tracking device which is a small chip. The gun can be tracked down and found if it is stolen

  28. Solution cont. The most important feature is the fingerprint detector (scanner) on the trigger. When a person buys the EmotronXL they have to go through process. The gun is registered to them and their personal information (phone number, address, etc.) is put into the database. Also, their fingerprint is taken and in scripted into the computer of the gun. The person puts their trigger finger on the trigger and the computer scans it and puts it in its memory for future recognition.

  29. Development & Implementation • The past was the past, the present is at now. But the future is at hand. And our EmotronXL is the future. Locks aren’t doing much to prevent guns from falling into the wrong hands. No form of gun can prevent and unauthorized person from using it. The EmotronXL will be the best thing that will ever happen to the future. The EmotronXL solves the problems presented by the current technology of guns. • . We had to come up with parts that would make a gun (an already existing technology) into our own (something original. Every part(feature) added to the gun went through a thorough process and evaluation. The following is the prototype of our technology to reduce (eliminate) gun violoence and make guns safer. There are many views of the gun provided, so each feature will be viewed to the fullest effect. SClub7 presents…. EmotronXL.

  30. Development & Implementation • Details of EmotronXL The handle of the gun features an emotion sensor. The trigger has a fingerprint detector, and a small computer screen on the side of the gun and a speaker. All of the features if the gun are connected and work together. And there is the tracking device. Many times when a person shoots gun they are acting on emotion, mostly anger. There emotion prevents them from thinking clearly. With the EmotronXL it can detect and analyze the emotional state of person.

  31. Details Con’t • When a person holds the gun the emotion sensor on the gun goes off. The sensor analyzes the tightness of the grip on the handle. When a person is very angry they will basically tighten their hands, most of the time ball their hands into a fist. Not only that sometimes the person will sweat profusely. The emotion sensor on the EmotronXL reads the pressure the person has the gun and sends a message to the computer of the gun. The gun shows the levels and lock the gun. And the speaker reads the levels and tells the person they are unable to use the gun due to their emotional state.

  32. Details Con’t • The most important feature is the fingerprint detector (scanner) on the trigger.

  33. Details Con’t • Therefore, only the person who the gun is registered to can use it. If someone else tries to use it the scanner scan their fingerprint and analyzes it. If the computer doesn’t recognize it the trigger locks and can’t be pulled. And the person will hear through the speaker “Authorized user, no access granted. Inside the gun is a tracking device which is a small chip. The gun can be tracked down and found if it is stolen.

  34. Lessons Learned • Well, this project was a new experience. One thing we all learned is how creative and innovative we all were in our own ways. We learned how to work together and how to compromise when this researcher didn’t like this design or this feature. We learned about guns and were able to design one ourselves. We developed new skills and used those we had but kept hidden. And honestly has seniors I think one of the main lessons learned is don’t procrastinate. We had the parts of the project done on time it was just putting them all together that was put on hold. But it was a great experience overall.
