  2. synopsis This film is based on the life of notorious gangster Vincent “Mad Dog” Coll (1908-1932).Verbally and physically abused by his father as a young child, ‘Mad Dog’ was often referred to by the elder Coll as a “Mama’s Boy”. Eventually after he turns seventeen, he forms a gang in his local neighborhood. Seen by many as a vicious and violent young man, Coll is despised and hunted down by practically the entire Big Apple, especially Lt. Darro of the NYPD as well as his main nemesis;infamous New York mob boss Dutch Schultz. He still has a few cohorts on his side, however, such as right-hand man Joe and burlesque stripper/mistress Clio. Eventually, Coll’s escapades become more and more risky, and his perception of himself leads him into madness, which culminates in Joe’s betrayal of Coll’s plan and Coll’sultimate death.

  4. grades • Entertainment Grade: B+: I wasn’t too thrilled with the large amount of gun violence in the film. However, I did enjoy the film’s score and characters. Historical Grade: A-: I do believe the violence and dialogue in the film, along with the black-and-white cinematography, gave a pretty good example of film noir

  5. reviews • “Mad Dog Coll”belongs back in the pound. As produced and written by Edward Schreiber, this is strictly a panting, one-dimensional little yarn about a bloodthirsty psychopath. The notorious Vincent Coll as we see him here, and as interpreted nasally by a reedy young actor named John Chandler, is a sadistic killer who mows 'em down at random, wars with the infamous Dutch Schultz gang and finally crawls away from the cops in a pool of blood.”(Howard Thompson, The New York Times, May 13, 1961) • “[Director Burt]Balaban, son of the pioneer-cinema exhibitor and president of Paramount in its heyday,…achieved minor cult status with the gangster movie Murder Inc. He followed it with the less successful portrait of the notorious killer 'Mad Dog' Coll (Chandler). Riveting drama that plays on Coll's psychotic killer mentality, his twisted childhood and resulting bitterness.This is a fun movie if you like the gangster-genre flicks - I think it has the potential to be a sleeper-cult film someday. When I first saw the flick in the early 70s I fell in love with it - and my elders looked at me like I was hallucinating. Now it's one of the most famous movies ever.
