  3. Some of the most deadly chemicals are TAR, CARBON MONOXIDE, NICOTINE

  4. TAR • Dark, sticky stuff that you find when tobacco burns • It sticks to cilia in trachea • Stops them from working properly

  5. CARBON MONOXIDE • It is a colorless, odourless gas • It binds to red blood cells and reduces oxygen to your body • Also found in car exhaust

  6. NICOTINE • It is a drug that speeds up nervous system, heart and other organs • It produces an ADDICTION, which means you need to have it

  7. Respiratory System Problems

  8. Kills cilia and stops the movement of mucus • Decreases Oxygen to cells • Creates Bronchitis, Emphysema and Cancers

  9. Bronchitis • It occurs when mucus builds up in your lungs • Makes you cough lots • You feel like you can’t breathe

  10. Emphysema • When the tissue in your lungs gets destroyed by smoking • You can’t get enough oxygen or get rid of enough Carbon Dioxide

  11. Cancer • The chemicals cause lung, throat and mouth cancer • This can kill you

  12. Circulatory

  13. Smokers are more that twice as likely to have heart attacks • Makes heart work harder because of little oxygen

Others related health problems • Liver cancer • Stomach cancer • Cancer of the pancreas • Colon cancer • Kidney cancer • Bladder cancer • Cancer of cervix • Sore throat • Cough and increased phlegm • Shortness of breath • Decreased lung capacity • Reduced fitness • Increased colds and flu • Pneumonia • Asthma • Inflammation of airways • Poor circulation • Chronic bronchitis • Emphysema • Blocks and weakens arteries of the heart • Reduced sense of smell • Reduced sense of taste • Staining of teeth • Plaque on teeth • Gum disease • Increased cavities • Ashtray breath • Ugly staining of fingers • Premature aging and increased wrinkles • Anxiety about health problems caused by smoking • Eyes sting and water more • Blindness and cataracts • Itchy eyes • Cancers of the lips • Cancer of the mouth • Cancer of the throat • Cancer of the larynx • Lung cancer • Cancer of the esophagus

Health problems cont’d • Heart attack • Strokes • Raises blood pressure causing hypertension • Stomach ulcers • Increased osteoporosis risk • Sperm deformity • Reduced number of sperm • Infertility in males • Impotence, erectile dysfunction • Increased period pains • Early menopause • Infertility in females • Leukemia • Gangrene • Weakened immune system • Increased stress • Dependence and addiction to a highly poisonous substance • And finally death

  19. 90% smokers start when teenagers • Ads and education help to stop people from smoking

  20. Anti-Smoking Advertisement Assignment • In groups (2-3 students), create an original advertisement (ex. poster, commercial, skit, etc.) to encourage students to avoid smoking.
