What Did You Go Out to See? Luke 7:24-27
Luke 7:24-27 24 And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to behold? a reed shaken with the wind? 25 But what went ye out to see? a man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they that are gorgeously appareled, and live delicately, are in kings’ courts. 26 But what went ye out to see? a prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet. 27 This is he of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, Who shall prepare thy way before thee.

A Reed Shaken with the Wind? • Along the Jordan River, fragile reeds easily swayed by the wind were common • Denotes a vacillating man; unstable; easily swayed by changes in popular opinion or practice • John’s life showed he was not such: • Mark 6:14-29 • Luke 3:7-14,18-20 • John 1:19-36; 3:27-30
Shaken Reed Preachers Today • Some put their “finger in the wind” first • Some vacillate from one view to the next because of the audience, opposition or a benefit to self • The social gospel approach appeals to whims and fancies of man • Not so of true gospel preaching: • Mark 13:12-13 • 1 Corinthians 1:18-24 • 2 Timothy 4:2-5 • 1 Peter 4:12-16
A Man Clothed in Soft Raiment? • The Greek phrase may refer to effeminacy, luxury or refinement • The English equivalent is “posh,” “fop,” “hip” or one overly concerned with appearance • John’s dress emphasized his prophetic place & message - both originated with God • John’s life showed he was not such: • Matthew 3:1-12 • Mark 1:2-8
Soft Raiment Preachers Today • Clerical robes of denominations violate this principle • Some pride themselves on “trademark” clothing • Same principle whether in dress, title or speech (showy vocabulary, pleasing delivery, Ph.D., etc.) • Appeal based on style rather than substance • Not so of true gospel preaching: • Matthew 23:5-12 • 1 Cor 2:1-5;2 Cor. 4:1-7
A Prophet? • Work of John as prophet was foretold in OT • Isaiah 40:3 • Malachi 3:1 • Malachi 4:5-6 • When he came, John preached message of God • Matthew 3:1-12 • Mark 1:1-4 • Luke 3:2-14 • John never attempted to change the message
Do We Always Hear and Preachthe Pure Truth of God’s Word? • Example of hearing the law from Ezra (Neh. 8:1-8) • “People were attentive…” • “Read therein… from early morning to midday” • “All the people stood up” • Example of Cornelius & his house (Acts 10:33) • Sent immediately to hear • All present, readiness to hear • To hear all things • Commanded of God • Must have a strong desire to hear truth and speak truth (Matt. 5:6;1 Pet. 2:2)
