Border States

Border States. 8 “slave” states remained in the Union after the CSA was formed. Lincoln did not use force b/c he didn’t want to lose them. After Fort Sumter – Arkansas, Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina join the CSA. Border States – Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, and Delaware.

  3. South - Confederacy - Rebels Advantages • Defensive War • Home field advantage • Better military leaders • Better soldiers • Believed in the cause

  4. Goals • North – 1) Blockade the South • 2) Capture Richmond, VA (capital) • 3) Control the Mississippi River • - Cut the south in half • South – 1) Capture Washington D.C. • 2) Keep the status quo • South has already achieved its main goal, independence. They just have to keep it.
