  2. Have a Conversation Pay attention to how both partners contribute to the conversation and keep the conversation moving.

  3. Raise your hand if… • You were able to talk for 3 minutes. • There were lulls in the conversation. • You were able to get the conversation moving. During the conversation: • You asked a yes / no question. • You asked an open question. • You made a comment. • You repeated or clarified what your partner said. • You paused after questions. • You added information from your own experiences.

  5. Comments Teacher: What are you painting? Lina: A house. Teacher: What a lovely painting. Lina: It’s my Gramma’s house. It has stairs.

  6. Open Questions Teacher: What do you have there? Jayden: Veggies! Teacher: Why do you have so many veggies? Jayden: They make me grow!

  7. DAP 156 Expansion & Expansion Plus Maria: My apple. Teacher: Yes, your apple! Maria: My apple. Teacher: Yes, you have an apple! Maria: I have apple. Teacher: Yes, you have a big red apple!

  8. Role Play • One person draw a conversation starter card from center of table. Role play the “child” by reading the card aloud to the table. • Remaining tablemates each provide a response in the role of “teacher” using one of the strategies presented.

  9. Additional Strategies: Self-Talk We’re making bread today. I am kneading the bread. Kneading means to mix by pressing and folding. Javon, would you like to try to knead the bread?

  10. DAP 156 Additional Strategies: Parallel Talk Mai is painting a lovely picture. She is using the red paint. Mai also painted green grass at the bottom.

  11. DAP 157 Additional Strategies: Labels & Descriptions People can live in lots of different houses. This family lives on a boat. It is called a houseboat. This family lives in a house made of straw and clay. The walls are clay and the roof is made of straw.
