Ballymun Whitehall Area Partnership Who we are • The Local Development Company for Ballymun Whitehall • Core funded by the Department of Environment Community and Local Government through Pobal • Our Board is drawn from • State Agencies, • Local Councillors, • Local People • IBEC • ICTU • Our Chair is Mary Taylor, Dublin City Council Area Manager

We work to support children and families locallyparticularly the most distanced from education and the labour market In addition our core funding from the DECLG we are contracted by • The Department of Social Protection and deliver the Local Employment Service through the Job Centre • The Department of Social Protection and deliver the Tus Programme and the Back to Work Enterprise allowance • The Department of Children and Youth Affairs and The Atlantic Philanthropies to deliver the Prevention and Early Intervention Programme through youngballymun • The Department of Children and Youth Affairs through the Dublin City Childcare Committee to deliver its service through our Dublin North West Childcare Resource Service • The HSE to deliver the Childminding Advisory Service in Dublin North Central

The Support Role of the PartnershipWe are support workers for our partners • We are a registered Charity • We act as the focus for the work of our partners • They choose to partner each other to deliver local solutions to the challenges local people face • Our Partners make decisions about what needs to happen • We help to make it happen • In this role we attend & support the administration and funding of the Principal’s Network activities

  5. School AttendanceWhy it is important • We know that good attendance has a positive impact on Educational outcomes • Poor attendance can result in poor levels of health, employment and income • It is a feature of social exclusion • It has long term individual and community impacts

  6. Do we care? When we recognise we have a challenge do we give in to.. ....“Nothing can be done!” • What are Parents Expectations? • What are Teachers Expectations? • What are Community Expectations? The power of expectations!

Many stakeholders, a whole town working together • Children and families • Excellent Local Schools • Dynamic Principals • NEWB, EWO’s, HSCL, SCPs, • Many Community Organisations • A broad range of State Agencies, Gardai, Doctors, Health professionals, City Council etc.

The Role of the Principal in School Attendance Principals Take the Leadership role in promoting school attendance • Therefore the whole school community know how important it is in our schools • There is room for individual classroom teachers creativity • The Principals Network reviews progress of the whole initiative periodically at its monthly meetings

The Local Impact of the Attendance Initiative In just 2 Years.... • Ballymun has almost halved the gap in whole school attendance between Ballymun and the National average • Ballymun has almost halved the number of children with chronic non attendance • Attitudes to school attendance are changing • Children are keen to attend school
