  1. Satire A literary work that ridicules its subject through the use of techniques such as exaggeration, reversal, incongruity, and/or parody in order to make a comment or criticism about it.

  2. Exaggeration To enlarge, increase or represent something beyond normal bounds so that it becomes ridiculous and its faults can be seen.

  3. Reversal To present the opposite of the normal order, such as: • The order of events • Hierarchy or roles

  4. Incongruity To present things that are out of place or are absurd in relation to its surroundings. "To alcohol! The cause of – and solution to – all of life’s problems"

  5. Parody To imitate the techniques and/or style of some person, place, or thing.

  6. Is it Satire? • Homer – driving home from work, he finds a uranium rod in his shirt and throws it out the window of his car. • Marge – her blue hair is two feet high. She worries about the family morality and often reads a magazine titled Fretful Mother.

  7. Is it Satire? • Monty Burns – Resembles a vulture. In one episode, he blackmails Springfield by completely blocking out the sun. • Itchy and scratchy – one of their episodes is titled, Scar Trek: The Next Laceration.
