Warm-up: Take out your 5 labeled sheets of paper and pen.Write 5-8 sentences on the following topic. Some people love to watch horror movies. Why do you think such morbid films appeal to some people?

Out of Order Grade Recovery Assignment Homework: • Read independent reading book. • 6th period ONLY Finish Adj. Out of Order grade recovery assignment. Warm-up: Take out your 5 labeled sheets of paper and pen.Write on your paper. Today is the perfect day for creating scary stories. Write the first sentence of a scary story on a piece of notebook paper. Then pass the paper to the person on your right. Each time I say “pass,” stop writing and pass the paper to the next person. Soon I will tell you to complete whichever story is in front of you. We will share the results.

  26. Work Session….Remember? Mini-lesson: Writing an Effective Paragraph & Elaboration 1. Make sure every paragraph has a topic sentence. 2. Relate each sentence to the topic sentence of the paragraph. 3. Arrange ideas in a clearly understandable order. 4. Link sentences by using pronouns, and by relating words, phrases, or ideas. 5. Support ideas with examples. 6. Describe to make a point. 7. Compare and contrast to develop an idea. 8. End paragraph by restating topic sentence in different words.

Argumentative Topic Writing Situation: Youth curfews are widely used in the USA to keep children off the street at night; a state of curfew makes it illegal to be out of doors between certain publicized times. In the USA over 300 individual towns have passed local curfew laws that vary in detail, but are all aimed at reducing juvenile crime and gang activity. In Britain a 1998 law allowed local councils to impose curfews for all children under ten, although none has yet chosen to do so. In defining the motion the proposition should think about the age groups at which the curfew is aimed, the hours it would operate, the penalties for offenders and any possible exceptions, for example, is it permitted to be out in the company of an adult? Writing Topic: Should children and teenagers be subject to curfew laws?

  30. What do you need to do • Reread writing situation and topic. • Read the article and YES and NO points. • Decide your position. • Complete prewriting. Create a chart, freewrite, web, etc. • Write a draft. • Make sure to begin with topic sentence. • Use pathos, ethos, and logos as elaboration (supporting details). • Use evidence from YES and NO points and article as elaboration (supporting details/evidence). Make sure to give credit to source. • Example • Debatewise, an online source, reports…. “….” • Flynn, author of “Should teens have curfews imposed by law?” stated, “….” • End paragraph by restating the topic sentence in different words.

LA.8.ELACC8RL3- Analyze how particular lines of dialogue or incidents in a story or drama propel the action, reveal aspects of a character, or provoke a decision. LA.8.ELACC8RL2- Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including its relationship to the characters, setting, and plot; provide an objective summary of the text. LA.8.ELACC8RL4 - Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone, including analogies or allusions to other texts.

  35. Opening Today is a self-guided reading lesson. It is intrapersonal; you are working ALONE. Stay on task. If you have a question, raise your hand and seek help. DO NOT BLURT OUT. Make sure that you follow directions and complete assignment accurately so that you can earn full credit. Make SMART decisions. 

Work Session Materials Needed: McDougal Littell Literature Book, paper, pen • Read “Flowers for Algernon” and “Charly” on pages 188-218. • Read silently. • Answer all questions that are written in the margins. • Answers must be written in complete sentences. • If I counted correctly, there are 31 questions; therefore, there should be 31 answers written in complete sentences.

  37. Closing EXIT TICKET—Write response for closing at the end of class assignment. Label it EXIT TICKET and write response in complete sentences. What did you learn from completing guided reading assignment? Turn in assignment and exit ticket.
