Vocabulary 3 • Immune –resistant to diseases • Exploit – to use something for profit or selfish needs • Innovation – something newly introduced • Missionary – a person sent by a church into an area to spread their beliefs and convert people • Mercantilism – economic policy that said a nation’s wealth was based on how much gold/silver it had. Export more than import.

Vocabulary 3 • Epidemic – when a disease affects many people in a specific area • Pandemic – when a disease affects people in an entire country or the world • Colony – a land/people controlled by a distant nation • Capitalism – economic system based on private/individual ownership with competition; Market Economy • Caste System – structure of society where classes are based on heredity

  6. Brainstorm: from what you currently know about the time period of 1300-1600, think of reasons why a European country would want to explore and what they would need to explore

  7. 1. The Renaissance • New spirit of adventure and curiosity • Marco Polo’s adventure to China • People were fascinated by other cultures • Ask the question: what else is out there?

  8. 2. Religion • Catholic Church – Missionaries - Jesuits • Need to get new converts since Protestant Reformation • Spread its power • Compete with the Protestant nations

  9. 3. Monarchies - Power • After Renaissance/Reformation, monarchies have more power in their country • Goal: to expand their nation’s power

  11. Problem and Solution • These goods had to travel through the Middle East, which was controlled by the Ottoman Empire (Muslims) • Very Expensive • Goal: Need to find a way around the ME • Quicker and cheaper route

  13. How? – Technology/Innovations • Caravel - Faster and sturdier ship • Triangular sails allowed it to sail against the wind. • Portolani – accurate maps • Compass • Astrolabe – determine a ship’s latitude
