  2. New England • Cold winters • Short growing season • Rugged landscape • Most New Englanders worked small farms • Grew wheat, rye, corn and potatoes • New Englanders exported lumber, and fish (Cod) • Principle sea port was Boston

  3. Middle Colonies • Family Farms (more prosperous than NE) • Produced more and better wheat • Philadelphia and NY became two great seaports

  4. The South • Long growing season, warmer climate • Raised tobacco • N.C. produced cattle and lumber • S.C. and Georgia produced rice • Charleston S.C. was the region’s largest port

  6. Regional social patterns • New England and the middle colonies, there were few African Americans • South, they were the majority of the population • Most immigrants to the South were poor, young, single men. • Most immigrants to New England were usually middle-class who immigrated as families

  7. Social patterns cont… • European immigrants seemed to favor the middle colonies • Middle colonies became very diverse • NE was a healthier place, free of Malaria and dysentery • People in NE were expected to live about 70 years, it was also had the biggest population

  8. Women in the Colonies • Few opportunities for women • Dependent on men • Men held all the power • Ran the household • Could not: • own property • Vote • Run for public office • Serve on a jury

  9. Education • More available in NE • Outside NE, some families taught their children to read
