  3. PowerPoint Guidelines • Not rules • Think – why are you doing this? • Not … • teaching • to look at later • like most lesson presentations • to impress with your Powerpoint knowledge • But …

  4. Think – why are you doing this? • Illustrate your message • Focus audience attention • Summarise main points

  5. Illustrate • simple master theme / slide design • simple consistent font style and size • slides should not be the content of your presentation to us – you are the means of communicating – slides are to support you

  6. Focus • few words • talk about the slide • don’t read it • don’t tell us what is on the slide • don’t look at projector screen • unless drawing our attention to it • we want to see you speaking to us • any animations or transitions must enhance • must not detract

  7. Animations and transitions • This presentation uses animation of text • The animation is ‘Fade’ with duration set to 0.25s • The transition used is ‘Fade’ • The effect option is ‘Through black’ • In Timing, ‘Apply to all’ has been selected. • The Duration has been reduced to 0.50s • If you use more dramatic animations or transitions, make sure there is a good reason for them!

Technical issues • We do not want to see: • You logging on or loading your presentation • Your editing screen for your presentation • The bottom left display which tells us that you are on only slide 3 of 27 slides • You in front of the screen • Your look of surprise when you get to the black End of slide show, click to exit slide. • So do this: • Use Mute on remote • Use USB memory • Start slide show • use F5 to save fiddling with mouse/menu • Close the offending display • Stand somewhere sensible • Use a remote slide trigger • Know your presentation • Toggle Mute off to start • Consider presenter mode

Consider … • Prepare your PPT presentation • Save that version (full) • Remove almost all the words (brief) • Use that (brief) version to project • Print this to give to the assessor (Miss Brash) • Either put the full text into brief version as notes • Print this (brief) version with notes for yourself • Or print your full version • perhaps as 4 to a page to give cue cards • Choose theme carefully • Use View Slide Master to design consistent slides • Presenter view

Presenter view • Set up on computer with projector/second monitor • Use ‘Windows-P’ key combination; toggle to “Extend” • Slide show tab • Set up slide show • Tick Show presenter view • Try it out! • This is what it looks like on your screen, while the projector only shows the top left window …

  11. Images • If you use images, make sure they • illustrate what you are saying at that time • do not distract • are not distorted and annoying by • being too small • having the wrong ratio • being unnecessarily pixellated • Be careful with • backgrounds • frames

Images – things to think about • Size and number • Make images fill the screen • Do not have many images on one slide if we need to see them • Have many images to create an impression • Have a laser pointer if you need to draw attention to images or features • If you want the audience to listen to you, don’t show another image which you will talk about next … • If you need to show a video clip, have it running as the audience come in after break
