  1. For creating a new vision of our future under energy-environmental problems and constructing the intelligent infrastructure Importance of Natural Mechanism 13 October 2006 Workshop in RE2006 Haruki SATO, Professor, Keio University, Japan

  2. What should we do for creating new?Three stages of research • Future technology (Dream?): ENERGY UTILIZATION • Simulation of future vision is important to concentrate R&D. • Who should study on this? government? We should make it. • Problem: It will not be supported by manufacturers. • Creating originality of your country is important. • Answer should not be only one (diversity). • Advanced technology (Current technology): many researches • great financial support will be provided from manufacturers, government, and other countries. • Infrastructure for technology: FLUID PROPERTY • Database and software like material properties • Problem: It spends money but does not directly make money. • Leveling-up your country in future. (Prof. Tanishita did this.) For creating a new vision of our future under energy-environmental problemsand constructing the intellectual infrastructure

  3. Infrastructure for technology Why Fluid Property? • Late Prof. Ichimatsu Tanishita • 1907- February 2005 • He wrote a text book ‘Thermodynamics’ • My Laboratory • Tanishita – Watanabe - Sato • 60 years ago, nothing in Japan • What did he do? • started to study on properties of steam For creating a new vision of our future under energy-environmental problemsand constructing the intellectual infrastructure

  4. Why did he study on steam properties? Why Japan became one of leading countries? • He thought that Japan must construct power generation plant by own technology. • Then what did he do? • He attended at International committee for preparing Steam Tables as an observer. • When the present IAPWS was established in 1970, Japan was a member country. • Now, Combined Cycle of power generation system has the efficiency higher than 50%. For creating a new vision of our future under energy-environmental problemsand constructing the intellectual infrastructure

  5. Natural Artificial SpaceAmenity space by smart idea in circulatory society So-called developed countries have many problems. Create something New! Energy Utilization

  6. Heat Island is a problem in Japan present air-conditioning for buildings 35℃ Tokyo Shinjuku Shibuya 27℃ artificial space HP For creating a new vision of our future under energy-environmental problemsand constructing the intellectual infrastructure

  7. HP Small energy is required for cooling. 35℃ Bandung in future 27℃ For creating a new vision of our future under energy-environmental problemsand constructing the intellectual infrastructure

  8. Learn from treesas the natural mechanism • Why are leaves not high temperature like surface of metal under strong sunshine? • Is it cooler under a tree? • How do leaves get waterfrom root? • What is transpiration? For creating a new vision of our future under energy-environmental problemsand constructing the intellectual infrastructure

  9. Why are leaves not high temperature like surface of metal under strong sunshine? the veins of leaves For creating a new vision of our future under energy-environmental problemsand constructing the intellectual infrastructure

  10. Water is important? • Under a tree, there is a large water jar. • How trees bring water to each leaves? For creating a new vision of our future under energy-environmental problemsand constructing the intellectual infrastructure

  11. Is it cooler under a tree? Why? • Water evaporates from each leaves. • When water changes tosteam, it need heat. • Leaves and air around the leaves are cooled. • Cooler air goes down by natural convection. For creating a new vision of our future under energy-environmental problemsand constructing the intellectual infrastructure

  12. Experiments of decompression boiling For creating a new vision of our future under energy-environmental problemsand constructing the intellectual infrastructure

  13. 20 15 Heater ) / K cool 10 Evaporator T - T ( 5 Condenser 0 0 1 2 time / h Delicate phenomena for natural-energy utilization For creating a new vision of our future under energy-environmental problemsand constructing the intellectual infrastructure

  14. Idea for thermal-energy transportation by a cool solar-panel Amenity space water transpilation tambient-3℃ Cooling Tower For creating a new vision of our future under energy-environmental problemsand constructing the intellectual infrastructure

  15. 100 kg/daytriple-effect Solar Still (COPD=2) For creating a new vision of our future under energy-environmental problemsand constructing the intellectual infrastructure

  16. Summary of Natural Artificial Space • It is only one example for alternative smart air-conditioning. • 1.Air-conditioning makes outside hotter (heat island in Japan). • 2.Small energy consumption is good enough for air-conditioning. • 3.We should learn from tree. • Not only mechanical engineering, but also many other • fields such as architecture, bio-engineering, health care • should be collaborated to create new space conditioning. • = system design engineering For creating a new vision of our future under energy-environmental problemsand constructing the intellectual infrastructure

  17. Do you know? When ambient temperature is higher, we will be wet. The control mechanism of pores for sweat in the skin by autonomic nerve is determined by incentive of two or three years old. If he or she grew completely within air-conditioned circumstance. ・・・What will happen for them? ・・・It is an example that artificial circumstance affect our body. from Dr. Yoko Hamada Associate Professor, Keio University KEIO SFC REVIEW、22, pp.18-19 (2004) For creating a new vision of our future under energy-environmental problemsand constructing the intellectual infrastructure

  18. natural environment within house rain snow woods glass ocean river earth- quake hurricane typhoon tornado Amenity space will require energy consumption. Artificial Environment community for people’s Life Safe and Secure keeping to be gentle symbiosis human being nature Energy conservation Energy consumption For creating a new vision of our future under energy-environmental problemsand constructing the intellectual infrastructure

  19. Asian amenity life = enjoying natural environment minimum completely conditioned space Comfortable artificial environment natural environment Energy conservation Energy consumption For creating a new vision of our future under energy-environmental problemsand constructing the intellectual infrastructure

  20. CEMSCluster Energy & Materials Management System • Friendly-use Electricity and Thermal Energy • Electric-power load-leveling • minimum capacity of energy conversion systems • Exergy-balanced system

  21. Summary of my talk today • I talked only background of my study today. • Create a new Infrastructure for symbiotic community by learning the natural mechanism like trees and the leaves. • Have a sense of the member for coming off actual world-wide measures based on effective thermal-energy utilization for Global Problems. For creating a new vision of our future under energy-environmental problemsand constructing the intellectual infrastructure
