  2. Section 1 What is Energy Right • Energy and Work: Working Together • Energy is the ability to do work • Kinetic Energy • The energy of motion Kinetic energy = mv2 2 • Example: • What is the kinetic energy of a car with a mass of 3000 kg traveling at 30 m/s?

Right • Potential Energy • Energy an object has because of position • Gravitational Potential Energy (GPE) • The energy of an object’s mass and height above the ground • GPE is at a maximum at the top • If you are on a trampoline, your GPE is at a max at the top of your jump GPE = weight x height • Example Problem • What is the GPE of a 640 N diver standing on a platform 4 m high?

Right • Mechanical Energy • The total energy of motion and position of an object • Juggling a pin • A baseball falling through the air Mechanical energy = potential energy+ kinetic energy • Example problem • A pin being juggled has a potential energy of 20 J and a kinetic energy of 600 J, what is the pin’s mechanical energy?

Other Energy Forms Right • Thermal • Due to random motion of particles • Any time an energy conversion occurs, some of the original energy converts to thermal, Ex: A hairdryer • Chemical • Comes from a compound that changes as its atoms are rearranged, Ex: Energy in food • Electrical • Energy of moving electrons, Ex: An amplifier and microphone • Sound • Caused by an objects vibrations, Ex: stretch a guitar string • Light • Produced by the vibrations of electrically charged particles • Nuclear • The energy that comes from the nucleus of an atom
