  2. Theme • Is the MEANING behind a work of literature. • It’s the central message. • What does the author want me to remember?

  5. IMPORTANT!!! THEME is not the SUBJECT of the text, it’s and insight or idea about the subject. Subject: Love Theme: Love conquers all. Subject: War Theme: When it comes to war, there are no winners.

  6. ALSO IMPORANT!! • Some works of literature have more than one theme. • Dr. Seuss’ Green Eggs and Ham has two themes… • #1: Don’t be afraid to try something new. • #2: People aren’t always what they seem.

  7. Background • Setting: Dublin, Ireland • Civil Wars in 1922 (June) • A town divided by politics: Republicans and Free Staters. • Republicans: “Ireland should be separate from England!” • Free Staters: “We need England’s help!”

  8. Pictures – Ireland 1920-ish

  9. Homework: • Create an alternate ending for “The Sniper.” • Keep graphic violence to a minimum– be creative, not bloody! • 1 page (depending on handwriting style) • Due tomorrow: Wednesday, September 12th
