  3. Universal Themes • Themes about emotions and experiences that are common across time periods and cultures. • What are some examples?

  4. Universal Theme Examples • “When it comes to war, there are no winners.” • “Difficult choices are part of growing up.” • “Love binds people together.” • “You get out of something what you put into it.”

  5. IMPORTANT!!! THEME is not the SUBJECT of the text, it’s and insight or idea about the subject. Subject: Love Theme: Love conquers all. Subject: War Theme: When it comes to war, there are no winners.

  6. ALSO IMPORANT!! • Some works of literature have more than one theme. • Dr. Seuss’ Green Eggs and Ham has two themes… • #1: Don’t be afraid to try something new. • #2: People aren’t always what they seem.

  7. Background • Setting: Dublin, Ireland • Civil Wars in 1922 (June) • A town divided by politics: Republicans and Free Staters. • Republicans: “Ireland should be separate from England!” • Free Staters: “We need England’s help!”
