The Transition is a process… • IPv6 is not Y2K • A full migration to a native IPv6 infrastructure could take decades • Breaking the transition into phases makes sense • In order to develop an approved product list, several decisions and policies need to be finalized • June 30, 2008 is the first leg of the marathon

  3. Seize the opportunity… • Information technology is in a constant state of evolution • The Internet is experiencing a growth spurt • Agencies (and businesses) are being afforded the chance to leverage “technology refresh”: • Redesign network topologies and infrastructure • Align technology portfolios with strategic goals via the FEA framework • Offer improved services and applications to customers • Enhance information assurance postures • IPv6 builds on the operational experiences of IPv4

  4. Goals for the next 14 months… • Finalize the USG profile and continue harmonization efforts with existing IPv6 profiles • Create a compliance testing program that will spawn test labs and ultimately and approved product list (APL) • Amend the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) to associate IPv6 with technology procurements • Establish goals for post-June 30, 2008 • Complete agency network “core” backbone transition plans and demonstrate the capacity to transmit IPv6 packets (per the OMB 05-22 mandate)
