CONTD…… • The COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT), received its Charter from the Federal Government in August 2000, as a Degree Awarding Institute (DAI) in the public sector. • Pursuant to the Federal Government of Pakistan’s decision, it is selected to be upgraded to the status of a university, more precisely Comsats University (CU).

  7. CONTD…. • It aims to reduce the ever-growing gap between the developed and developing world through useful applications of science and technology.

  8. HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE • The Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) initiated the proposal for the formation of COMSATS under the leadership of Nobel Laureate, Dr. Abdus Salam. • The foundation-conference of COMSATS was held at Islamabad on 4th & 5th October 1994.  • Representatives from thirty-six countries attended. The participants included twenty-two Minis­ters, members of the diplomatic community of Islamabad and representatives of international organizations, like UNESCO, UNIDO, UNEP and the World Bank.

MEMBERSHIP • Currently with twenty one (21) developing countries.. • COMSATS has selected thirteen Centers of Excellence in its member countries to develop a Network of International Science and Technology Centers for Sustainable Development in the South. These Centers have been selected as nodes and are being used to provide a leading role in their respective areas of specialization. 

  10. COMSATS has focused its attention on various fields of science and technology on priority basis. So far, it has selected fields of Information Technology, Renewable Energy, Climate and En­vironmental Sciences, Chemical Sciences, and Development of Small and Medium Enterprise (SME). These focused areas are revised from time to time according to the changing national/regional priorities and expanding areas of expertise of the COMSATS Network of Centers of Excellence.

IR CONTD….. • University of Nebraska, USA • Collaborative Research, Training, Curriculum, Institutional development, Exchange of faculty & students. • Joint Institute of Nuclear Research, Dubna, Russia • Research in nuclear physics through exchange of researchers, joint research, joint organized symposia. • University of Bradford, UK • To help establish Mechanical and Manufacturing engineering program.

ACHIEVEMENTS AND RANKINGS • According to HEC’s ranking of engineering universities, CIIT is at number 8 among the engineering institutions of higher education during 2006.  • In terms of research output, CIIT has been ranked at number 7 amongst the institutions of higher education numbering more than 114 in the country during 2006, as notified by HEC.

CONTD.. • CIIT has also been ranked at number 7 in research ranking of Universities on the basis of cumulative Impact Factor based on Institute of Scientific Information (ISI) web of knowledge (USA), as notified by HEC. • The present student strength is around 13,239 with faculty strength of 1,313. The Institute in the short time has already produced high quality graduates numbering more than 6,916, who are serving the nation in the various callings.

R & D • From the very day of its Establishment, comsats have put itself into challenges of r & d. • Faculty members are quite active in research in their respective fields. • To further encourage the research environment at the institute, the CIIT management has also announced ‘Cash Awards’ for publications of research Articles by CIIT’s Employees i.e. Rs. 5, 000 & Rs. 10, 000 for research articles published in national & international journals, respectively.

RESEARSCH AREAS: CAST • Centre for Advanced Studies in Telecommunication (CAST) was established on 12 December 2007 as an independent research institute committed to quality research in the area of telecommunication. CAST has been directly funded by higher education commission HEC of Pakistan. Establishment of CAST has en­sured long term continuity of quality and industry relevant research.

CONTD… • Oxford University Press e-Books contains the full-text of over 1,350 Oxford books in the areas of Economics and Finance, Political Science, Mathematics, Physics, Religion, Man­agement Sciences and some Social Sciences Subject categories. Keywords are available at book and chapter level, and up to 200 new and recently-published books are added each year.

COURSES OFFERD • Currently the CIIT is offering 41 different degree programs in the fields of Informa­tion and Communication Technology, Management Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Bio-sciences, Development Studies, En­vironmental Science, Meteorology, and Architecture and Design.

FUTURE PLANS • The CIIT-UWS • Academic Cooperation between the COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) and the University of Western Sydney (UWS), Australia has finally been placed on May 5, 2009. • Dr. S. M. Junaid Zaidi, Rector CIIT signed this agreement in Islamabad which was then pre­sented in formal signing ceremony to Professor Janice Reid, Vice Chancellor UWS.

  27. CONTD.. • This MoU is different since it followed already active and productive research collaboration between the two institutes. Prof. ShahidNadeemChohan is currently running a research project on Citrus in collaboration with Dr. Paul Halford of the UWS. Prof. RaheelQamar is Co-PI in this research project. This collaboration has so far trained three research associates in the field of Molecular Plant Pathology and produced four publications and presentations nationally and in­ternationally. This research has been funded by the HEC, the HEC encourages the Foreign Fa­culty to forge broad based links between their parent and host institutions

  28. CAMPUSES • Being federally established institute, the CIIT currently has seven campuses in Islamabad, Lahore, Wah, Abbottabad, Attock, and Sahiwal, while six more cam­puses are in pipeline including Gujarat, Toba Tek Singh, Karachi, Quetta, Vehari, and Larkana. The future plans also envisage opening of more campuses in the provinces of Sind and Baluchistan, as well as overseas.
