  3. Review • What was the sin (that we just studied in II Samuel 12) that set up a number the events we will be studying this quarter? • How did David react when he was approached by Nathan? • Did God forgive David? • Were the consequences removed with the forgiveness?

Consequences • 2 Sa 12:11 Thus says the Lord, ‘Behold, I will raise up evil against you from your own household; I will even take your wives before your eyes and give them to your companion, and he will lie with your wives in broad daylight. • 12 Indeed you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, and under the sun.’” • 14 However, because by this deed you have given occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, the child also that is born to you shall surely die.” • Sword Will Never Depart from Your House • Evil Raised Up from Your Own Family • Wives will be Taken By a Close Companion • The Child Born to Bathsheba will Die

Amnon’s Sin • Amnon – oldest son of David by Ahinoam • Absalom – third son of David by Maacah • Tamar – daughter of David by Maacah • Jonadab – 1st cousin of all (son of David’s brother Shimeah) II Samuel 13 - • Amnon was so frustrated he made himself ill. • Jonadab offered advice to his friend Amnon • Amnon followed this advice

  6. Amnon’s Sin • II Samuel 13:14-15 • Amnon would not listen to the plea of Tamar and he violated her • Then he “hated her with a very great hatred” and sends her away • What should the consequences be for this? • Deuteronomy 22:25-29

  7. Absalom’s Plot • Two years go by • Sheepshearing was occurring in Baal-hazor • Invite all of the King’s sons to the feast • Strike vengeance on Amnon • Then he would flee to Geshur

Joab’s Influence • II Samuel 14:1-20 • Joab brings in a wise woman from Tekoa • Has her tell a story to King David • Two sons who struggled and one struck the other and killed him • The whole family wants to kill my son but it would “extinguish my coal which is left” • David is willing to protect her son • II Samuel 14:13-17 - The woman then speaks to David about his own son

Absalom Returns • Joab is allowed to retrieve Absalom from Geshur(v 21) • David does not face the situation and does not want Absalom to see his face • II Samuel 14:28 - Now Absalom lived two full years in Jerusalem, and did not see the king’s face. David sees Absalom Absalom Returns Tamar incident Absalom’s Revenge 2 Years 3 Years 2 Years

  11. Lessons • Life after sin. Even when your sin is forgiven. • Consequences still exist! • Does sin really make you happy? • Should our own previous sin change the way we deal with sin in others? • Difference in David’s reaction when confronted with his sin vs. David’s reaction to Amnon’s sin • What can we learn about the advice of our friends? • Should it align with God’s desires or our own?

Review • 2 Sa 12:11 "Thus says the LORD: 'Behold, I will raise up adversity against you from your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this sun. 12 'For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, before the sun.'“ 14 "However, because by this deed you have given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also who is born to you shall surely die.”

Review • Absalom flees and is not allowed to return for 3 years until Joab intervenes • David still does not face the situation and does not want to see Absalom. 2 years pass • David relents and sees Absalom. 4 years pass David sees Absalom Absalom rebels Absalom Returns Tamar incident Absalom’s Revenge 2 Years 3 Years 2 Years 4 Years

  16. Absalom – seeks reconciliation • Sends word to Joab to help him • Joab ignores him • Absalom has his servants get Joab’s attention • Joab relays message from Absalom. • David reconciles with Absalom

  17. Absalom – the coup • Absalom seeks permission to go to Hebron to worship. • Takes a large company • Sends for Ahithophel • Trumpets sound and declaration is heard throughout nation, “Absalom is king in Hebron”

  18. David – a king without a throne • David flees Jerusalem • Lost control • Lost respect • Ineffective leader • Once again hiding

  19. David – a king without a throne • David flees Jerusalem • Those loyal to him accompany him • Cherethites, Pelethites, Gittites • Citizens weep, along with David himself, as he passes • Priests bring the ark and offer sacrifices as they pass

  21. Thoughts • Leaders must be above reproach. Elders are perfect examples of this • David’s personal sins effected his judgement • Lost control, respect and became ineffective • What led Absalom to rebel? • Pride? Ambition? • No respect for God and his authority • David flees. • He puts matters into God’s hands whether or not he ever returns to Jerusalem

The Lord has returned upon you all the bloodshed of the house of Saul…you are taken in your own evil…”

  25. Abishai’s reaction • Shimei was throwing stones and insults at David and his men. • 16:9 - Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Let me go over and cut off his head. • David: What if the Lord has told him to do this?

  26. Absalom enters Jerusalem • “Ahithophel with him” • Hushai greets Absalom • Absalom is surprised • Ahithophel gives advice to “Go in to your father’s concubines…” • vs 22 - So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof

  27. Ahithophel • His advise was “as if one inquired of the word of God” • Remember David’s reaction in 15:31 • He now gives additional advice to take men and pursue David tonight! • Absalom likes that advice but also wants Hushai’s counsel

  28. David’s Spy • Hushai goes to Zadok and Abiathar • Jonathan and Ahimaaz were the runners and they were staying at En-rogel to not be seen leaving the city • David notified and they cross the Jordan

  37. Thoughts • David’s love for Absalom caused many poor decisions. • Even in Absalom’s death, David is not making good decisions. • David listened to Joab’s rebuke/advice once again • After the conclusion of the battle...repair the rift

  41. Sheba’s Revolt Dealt With • Amasa is called to gather men and be back in three days • Abishai is called after 3 days to take the mighty men and pursue Sheba • They meet up with Amasa at the large stone in Gibeon

  42. Sheba’s Revolt Dealt With • Joab greets Amasa and strikes him down • Men are shocked at the sight of Amasa in the highway • All the men gather against Abel Beth-maacah where Sheba has retreated

Famine in the Land • Three years there was a famine • David inquires of the Lord • “It is for Saul and his bloody house, because he put the Gibeonites to death” • David then talks to the Gibeonites concerning how to make atonement • Give seven men from the sons of Saul that we may hang them before the Lord
