  2. Acids and Bases at Home: Animal Stings Some animal stings contain acids (eg ant or bee). These can be neutralised by a base like most soaps. Other stings can be basic (eg wasp or jellyfish) and they can be treated using an acid like vinegar.

  3. Acids and Bases at Home: Gardening Some plants prefer acid soil and some basic soil Lime increases pH (basic) Ammonium Sulphate decrease pH (acidic) Swimming Swimming pool needs to be between pH 7.2-7.8

  4. Reactions of Acids and Bases: With Carbonates Carbonate + Acid → Salt + Water + Carbon Dioxide Eg Sodium Bicarbonate + Hydrochloric acid → Sodium Chloride + Water + Carbon Dioxide

  5. Reactions of Acids and Bases: With Hydroxides Hydroxide + Acid → Salt + water Eg Sodium Hydroxide + Hydrochloric acid → Sodium chloride + Water

  6. Reactions of Acids and Bases: With Metals Metal + Acid → A Salt + Hydrogen Eg Zinc + Hydrochloric Acid → Zinc Chloride + Hydrogen

  7. Testing Gold with acids: Scratch the object with a file and apply a drop of Nitric Acid. If the object turns a bright green it is gold plated or gold filled on base metal. If the object turns a pinkish cream colour it is plated or gold filled on silver. 10 karat gold will turn dark brown. 12 karat gold will turn light brown. 14 karat or higher will have little or no reaction.
