Known and respected but… • Throughout the Eastern U.S., Danforth was known for being a member of the courts system • He was known for his cruelty and stubbornness in the courtroom • People feared him, but respected his authority at the same time • But his authority would eventually be questioned but not shaken when it came to the witch trials

  3. Hard Headed • No matter how Danforth felt about the accused in court, he had to stick to facts • He showed no emotion at all, nothing but a straight, blank face • He showed the correctness of his decisions by his firm attitude and no willingness to give in www.guardian.co.uk

Mind of His Own • Danforth may have been a member of the courts, but he made the decisions as to whether the accused were innocent or guilty based on his own idea of the law • He added some sarcastic humor into his reasoning's along with slight attitude http://www.lehigh.edu/~ineng/ttk/marywarren.jpg

Mine and mine only • Danforth would do almost anything to get what he wanted out of the accused • Forced Proctor to admit his past with Abigail and involvement in witchcraft even though he wasn’t involved in witchcraft • Had feeling of pleasure with other people’s suffering even though he didn’t show it • Knowing he couldn’t be shaken, he did what he pleased with evidence

  6. Is Danforth an intimidator? YES! • In the Crucible, Danforth would do almost anything to keep up his reputation • That includes- no sympathy - hanging innocent people - refusing to accept the truth - ignored Mr. Hale and his reasoning's - wouldn’t listen to any evidence of innoncence

Real Life • Born in 1622 in Framlingham, England and died on November 5, 1699 in Cambridge, Massachusetts • Eldest of six: three sisters and two brothers • Immigrated in 1634 to escape prosecution for their Puritan beliefs • Married Mary Withington in 1644 • Had twelve children; only two lived to become adults • Owned a huge property (15 mi.) known as Danforth’s Farm • Eventually became Framingham, Massachusetts

Danforth’s Life Leading to Judge hood • From 1659 until 1678, he was an assistant under the Massachusetts government • 1679- became deputy governor • Elected president of the province of Maine, and became independent of Massachusetts • Was made into a judge in superior court • 1681- opposed the acts of trade and asserted the charter rights of the country • 1692- showed seriousness and authority by condemning people for witchcraft

  9. Personality • He was a bitter man who believed in nothing, but the law • Every law must be followed exactly • Had no sympathy • However, he went against the court’s decision and stood up for the people accused of being witches

  11. Discussion Questions Do you think that Danforth should have asked for more evidence towards the convicted? Why? Should the town’s people have taken a stand towards Danforth’s authority based on their opinions? Or should they have trusted his judgments? Based on the video, should Danforth have acted as stubborn and closed-minded given the situation he was in? Why? In real life, do you think Danforth was a good person? Why?
