  3. Jews and the Roman Empire • Zealots- believed in the establishment of an independent Jewish state • Messiah- anointed king sent by God (savior) • 66 AD- Jews revolted against Rome

  4. Jesus Christ • The central figure of Christianity • Age 30- began recruiting “apostles” • Taught in parables

  5. Jesus Christ • 4 Gospels • Matthew, Mark, Luke, John • Sermon on the Mount • Love God and love your neighbor

  6. Jesus Christ • Death • Betrayed by Judas, one of his apostles • Crucified

  7. Early Christian Church • Formally joins through baptism • Eucharist: called Holy Communion, the Sacrament that represents Christ’s sacrifice

  8. Spread of Christianity • Peter: apostle who spread Christianity throughout Rome • Paul: Jewish convert who spread Christianity outside of Rome • Persecution • Martyr- person who suffers or dies for his/her beliefs

  9. Romans Adopt Christianity • Structure- hierarchy • Bishop: church official responsible for all Christians in an area • Patriarch: bishops of major empire cities • Pope: supreme power over patriarchs • By 395 AD Christianity is declared the official religion
