  2. The Fraction ½ is familiar. It literally means 1 out of 2. There are other fractions equal to ½ that hold the same value but look slightly different.

  3. Private think time: “What fractions can you think of that are equal to ½?” Partner share: “________ is equal to ½. I know this because__________ Did you think of these? What do you notice about all these fraction bars?

  4. In Notebook:Equivalent fractions look different but have the same value and can be found on the same spot of a number line. Example: ½, 2/4, 3/6, 4/8 *Think of your own example*

  5. Finding Equivalent Fractions Let’s change 1/3 to an equivalent amount of sixths How many groups of 3 does it take to make 6? That’s right, it takes 2 groups of 3 to make six, so let’s cut each section into two pieces. Now we have 2/6 shaded and it’s still equivalent to 1/3!

  6. In Notebook: Draw these fraction bars ¾ = 9/12 Make sure they’re the same size! How many groups of 4 does it take to make 12? That’s right, it takes 3 groups. So let’s cut each fourth into three pieces to make twelfths.
