Timeline 9/15 - 12/1 Student/Counselor Meetings 10/1 - Early Action/Early Decision Intent Due 10/1 - Financial Aid-FAFSA and the CSS/Profile Available 10/15 - Teacher Recommendations Due 10/26 - Submission of EA/ED Supporting Documents without Q1 grades 11/16 - Submission of EA/ED Supporting Documents with Q1 grades 12/20 -Submission of Regular Decision Supporting Documents 2/4 - Submission of Q1 & Q2 Grades 5/1 - National Decision Day 6/21 - Submission of Final Transcripts *On-site interviews TBD

Early Action and Early Decision • We need to know by October 1st! • Teachers are aware and can prioritize letters and supporting documents. • We need to know for transcripts. • Early Action - Non Binding • Done early! • Beneficial depending on programs • Early Decision - Binding • Top school that student absolutely wants to go to

5. Financial Aid ALL Schools Require: • FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) after October 1 for 2018 • Required by all schools, and some scholarship organizations • STATE GRANT FORM (TAP) • Required for first-year students after FAFSA is completed

6. Financial Aid SOME Schools and Scholarship Organizations Require: • CSS PROFILE • Own Financial Aid worksheets

7. CSS Profile • Collegeboard.org • Submit if required in addition to the FAFSA • $25 for initial report, $16 additional reports • Fee waivers available, based off of completed application

8. Free Application for Federal Student Aid • Must file a FAFSA to be eligible for these programs each year a student attends school • File online – Fast, Secure, Skip Logic, Built-in Edits, Start/Save/Stop

9. Deadlines are Crucial • Make sure you know the priority FAFSA filing deadlines for the schools you are considering. • File your FAFSA prior to the earliest deadline, even if you have to estimate your information. If you estimate, you must update the FAFSA later.

10. School Selection • Schools will only be allowed to see your financial information when you list them on the FAFSA • You can add up to 10 colleges • NOTE: Once your final decision is made, update your NY TAP information with the school you WILL attend, if in-state.

11. Info You May Need to Complete the FAFSA • Social Security Numbers • Driver’s license (student only; this information is optional) • Previous year’s federal income tax return (1040, 1040A or 1040EZ) • W-2 forms from all employers • Current bank statements (checking and savings) • Current business and farm records (if >100 employees / if you don’t live on the farm) • Records of any stocks, bonds and other investments, including 529 accounts (Net amounts) • Additional untaxed income, tax records may be needed such as: Veteran’s non-educational benefits, child support paid/received, workers’ compensation, disability payments • Alien registration or permanent resident card (if not a U.S. citizen)

12. Signing the FAFSA • NEW - Replaces the “PIN” as of 5/10/15 • Student and one parent will sign the FAFSA electronically - each needs a SEPARATE email address and ID/password • Create FSA ID at: www.FSAID.ed.gov or at FAFSA.gov • FSA ID 3 days in advance

Online State Grant Application • Link off the FAFSA Application Confirmation Page • Missed the link or it wasn’t available? • Head to https://www.tap.hesc.ny.gov/totw/ • Additional questions needed to determine NY State Grant eligibility: • Enrollment status (full-time/part-time) • Value of NY 529 College Savings Program • Program of study for students in vocational programs • Employment status

14. What to Expect from Us • Individual student driven meetings (parents welcome) • Essay support • Counselor letter of recommendation • In school sessions to review and complete applications (after school as needed) • Submission of the following • Transcripts • Letters of Recommendation (teacher and counselor) • School Profile • School Reports

15. What We Expect from Students • Ownership and accountability for this process • Scheduling and attending meetings • Coming to meetings prepared • Have completed research on colleges • Have an idea of their list of colleges • Have started the Common App • Have started their essay • Have thoughtful questions • Has read all emails from counselors • Students are responsible for: • Keeping track of deadlines • Submitting test scores • Submitting applications including essay and supplements

16. Tonight... • FA - 7:10-7:20 • Period one begins with 7 minute period and 3 minute passing periods • There will be a bell and there will be announcements! • You will not hear announcements in the courtyard.
