  2. Overview SARGF Statistics SARGF Case Management System (CMS) Clinical Practice Guidelines and Treatment Protocols Integrated Care Program( ICP) SARGF Provincial Treatment Network SARGF Mobile App and Web Applications Responsible Gambling Tools’(RGT’s) & Online Screening tools

  3. Spectrums of Problem Gambling

  4. SARGF Over the last few years, there has been significant advances and innovations (such as, online gambling and online betting) in the gaming industry, thus prompting us as the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation, to look at more effective interventions to combat this 4th industrial revolution and it’s negative effects.

  5. …SARGF Continued The statistics from the last few years have shown an alarming trend towards these electronic and illegal gaming options that seem readily available. In most cases the data available to us is only of those clients/ punters that are on the problematic gambling behaviour spectrum, or the disordered spectrum.

  6. Annual Treatment Trend

  7. Data Management Aids in development of effective treatment programs, execution, and supervision of plans regarding policies and practices. That protect, control, deliver and enhance the quality and value of the service.

  8. Gambling Preferences

  9. SARGF Case Management System(CMS) As the problematic gambler is of primary concern, we have invested in redesigning our case management system (CMS System), the previous version we used worked effectively with regards to capturing client data and compiling a report for the assigned treatment professional. However, as the innovations progress we noted some of the shortcomings.

  10. SARGF CMS System Our new CMS system allows for online user interface that only registered users may assess, anywhere in the country. The objective is that treatment professionals all over the country may upload their treatment information. Enabling a more extensive network amongst SARGF TP’s of clients with recognised conditions.

  11. Referral Sources Captured on CMS

  12. SARGF CMS System Each Client has a unique generated case number that is forwarded to the TP, another feature we would like to add to this section is a generated code for each client.

  13. …SARGF CMS System Continued For instance, if a client is referred to a TP for treatment the client will then receive a SMS alert with a specific code, that must be presented to the TP, the TP cannot forward a claim for that client should that code not be present. The only individuals who would have access to this information would then be the In-house SARGF TP’s, and the assigned TP aligning to the POPI requirements we all need to adhere too.

  14. …SARGF CMS Continued We’ve also recognised that, in the past punters would be referred to a treatment professional for counselling sessions and would not show for the sessions due to location. The new CMS system uses geolocation, assisting the punter’s referring counsellor to find their nearest treatment professional.

  15. …SARGF CMS Continued Security was a concern, since the new system would allow more users access. The new system is hosted on a cloud server Registered users have designated access from a secure network, meaning myself as a treatment professional for instance would have full access, where the data capturer only has access to the numbers.

  16. …SARGF CMS Continued Developers, CMS Maintenance and Budget.

  17. …SARGF CMS Continued Since we have upgraded our CMS, we have noticed certain trends concerning our clients. the foundation aims to formulate and build new research based on the information available. Some of the studies that we seek assistance with are: Investigating the correlation between socio-economic status and problem gambling, and Exploring the relationship between marital status and problem gambling and others.

  18. Clinical Practise Guidelines Clinical practice guidelines are systematically developed proclamations to assist our practitioner’s and client’s decisions about appropriate health care for specific circumstances. We adhere to the South African Professional Conduct Guidelines in Psychology (2007) and develop our treatment protocols based on these guidelines.

  19. SARGF Treatment Protocols We annually update and adapt our treatment and helpline counselling protocols to align with the international treatment trends regarding gambling disorder. Our treatment protocols were last updated July 2019

  20. …SARGF Treatment Protocols At present we would be updating our protocols when the new Diagnostic Statistical Manual VI is released. We are currently still using the DSM V version.

  21. Integrated Care Program (ICP) Evaluation of the effectiveness of our treatment program is done through ICP’s. Clients are contacted, 3 months and 6 months after they have been referred to a TP. The client is then asked regarding their current circumstances, financial circumstances, treatment process and gambling habits post-treatment.

  22. SARGF Provincial Treatment Network SARGF has a current network of TP’s in South Africa, TP’s in Lesotho, Namibia and Swaziland. In addition to having tis network of clinical social workers, Clinical and Counselling Psychologists and registered counsellors, we’ve approached psychiatrists to join the team. The goal is to have provincial consulting network of psychiatrists that may assist our clients when needed.

  23. SARGF Mobile APP and WEB APP We at the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF), is in the process of developing a mobile and web app to assist our clients, operators and regulators. The aim of the SARGF APP would be to prevent problematic gambling, through ”Bet Buddy”.

  24. …SARGF Mobile App Continued The concept of a “Bet Buddy” is, to allow the client to trace their playing history, by creating a play pattern for themselves. Which may also allow them to decide on venue preferences regarding their gambling activities.

  25. …SARGF Mobile App Continued We want our clients to create their own unique user profiles, as a means of encouraging responsible gambling habits. For instance, the client can enter his/her data regarding their winnings and losses as well as the preferred gambling establishment where they were gambling.

  26. …SARGF Mobile App Continued Using a geolocation tag, which will allow the client to track their gambling patterns based on the information they submit.

  27. …SARGF Mobile App Continued Also, Encouraging tips on responsible gambling through the app. Focusing on the psycho-educational aspect of gambling disorder. This includes; Information on saving, budgeting, stress relief techniques and time management.

  28. …SARGF Mobile App Continued Once developed we aim to approach different stakeholders, to align it with their player management systems and client retention systems. (For instance; loyalty points, if a client downloads the app and completes the responsible gambling quizzes this may generated a reward system).

  29. …SARGF Mobile App Continued How does this play pattern aid in responsible gambling habits. & How can it apply to clients who gamble at casino venues.

  30. (RGT’s) and Online Screening tools Play Patterns can be used as responsible gambling tool and a screening tool. Play pattern aids in a self-testing scenario. The client can see and evaluate their behaviour. A form of self-administration to examine their risk of developing problems related to gambling.

  31. RGT’s and Online Screening tools The client may have questions and queries that can be answered by the app on their mobile devices. Basic Online screening questionnaire Mindfulness techniques Self-help exercises.

  32. …RGT’s and Online Screening Tools Continued Recovery Tracking Social Support; For clients who are faced with a gambling addiction and are presently in treatment, we understand that, the hardest part of recovery are the initial stages

  33. …RGT’s and Online Screening tools Continued The techniques we aim to adopt would be that of which we are already using in therapy. For instance, clients that come for counselling sessions get issued with a Daily behavioural Mood diary. We aim at using the same concept and adapting it as per international current examples:

  34. …SARGF Mobile App Continued There are some responsible gambling apps that are available, however the focus of this one would be to incorporate the concept of a “Bet buddy” with a “Therapeutic touch”. Using a solution focused therapy approach to problem solving. These features allow the client to learn skills, strategies and responsible gambling tips whilst, helping them find solutions to their own problems.

  35. …SARGF Mobile App Continued Addiction on its own does not occur in a vacuum. Hence, these could flag an early intervention to the client. Making the client aware he/she may be in need of assistance, the concept would aid in a human intervention.

  36. …SARGF Mobile App Continued The use of charts and graphs, display the client’s behavioural patterns which eliminates the denial factor. The Client can make an informed objective decision pertaining to their psychological wellbeing.

  37. …SARGF Mobile App Continued Most clients who start treatment still attach an element of denial, “I’m not that bad, I’ll win my money back”. However, having the data that they submitted to their profile, which shows the flow of their actions, does assist in early effective interventions and helps the client recognise destructive behavioural patterns.

  38. SARGF Website App The Self- quiz on our website has been gaining an increasing amount of attention. Clients would complete the self-quiz before inquiring a call back Clients would complete the self-quiz before inquiring a call back. In a short space of time, there has been a total of 331 Self referrals of problem gambling clients from our website alone.

  39. …SARGF Web App Continued Adding a gamification to a responsible gambling approach.

  40. SARGF WEB APP Online chat forum to website. Notion of socialization (social support) in itself can be strong combatant against problem gambling Having this form of support from clients or people, can encourage a space for personal growth and refection Anonymity

  41. Online Counselling and Chat Online Counselling Online counselling can be conducted asynchronously [e-mail], which is time-delayed between user’s submission and a counsellor’s reply or synchronously [chat], which is live and occurs in real-time[ WhatsApp]

  42. …Online Counselling and Chat Continued

  43. SARGF SARGF App connect various Mediums Gamified marketing techniques as a way to gain and retain their clients at their gambling establishments and websites. We aim to apply similar techniques to help the clients educate themselves regarding responsible gambling and or to gamble more responsibly

  44. SARGF We have a duty to protect our clients from developing problems, techniques such as gamification would aid as a way of enabling and empowering clients to gamble more responsibly.
