  2. Definition • Excretion- the removal of waste products from the body • Can be gases or liquids • Gases • Carbon Dioxide • Liquids • Urine • Sweat

  3. Major organs • Lungs- removal of carbon dioxide and some water • Skin- sweat which water, some salts, and organic substances • Urinary system- produces urine which removes water, salts, and metabolic wastes

  4. Skin Structure • Largest Organ in the body • Outermost layer- EPIDERMIS • Dead skin cells used for protection and as a water repellant • Melanin- a skin pigment produces the color of the skin • Inner layer- Dermis • Thicker than the epidermis • Contains blood vessels, nerves, muscles, oil and sweat glands • Innermost layer- Fatty layer

  5. Skin Function • 1. Protection- from germs, bacteria, and viruses • 2. Sensory Response- Your sense of touch • 3. Vitamin D formation-Helps your body absorb calcium and is produced in the presence of ultraviolet light • 4. Regulation of Body Temperature-Blood vessels in the skin can hold or release heat

  6. Functions cont. • 5. Removal of wastes • The skin has 3 million sweat glands • The glands help regulate temperature by cooling the skin • Sweat glands release water, salts, and other waste products

  7. The urinary system • Purpose- rid the blood of wastes • Maintains blood volume by removing excess water

  8. Organs and parts • Kidneys- the filtering devices of the blood • Ureters- lead from the kidney to the bladder • Bladder- storage of the urine until it is ready to be released • Urethra- tube leading from the bladder to the outside for release of the urine

Kidneys • The major filtering device of the kidney is the NEPHRON • Each nephron is made of capsule or cuplike structure called the Bowman’s Capsule • First Filtration- Water, sugar, salt, and wastes • AND the collecting tubule • Water, sugar and salt are reabsorbed in the collecting duct and returned to the blood • Urine is formed here

  10. Disease of the Urinary system • Most common is infection of any part of the urinary system • Sometimes there is blockage of a tube • Development of kidney stones • Some malfunction that requires dialysis- which is the artificial removal of wastes from the blood with a machine

  11. Liver • Part of the digestive system but also filters blood for wastes • Hemoglobin is broken down from RBC to form bile • Excess amino acids are converted to urea • Medications you take are detoxified to be removed from the body
