President Mwai Kibaki “It is sad to see Kenyans killing each other in the name of democracy.” During the election with President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga in December, there was a lot of violence. About 1,500 people died because of the violence about the Presidential election. Another 600,000 people were displaced. Now 140,000 people are still homeless. Eventually the two men decided on a power sharing government. After months and months of a hold still. They are now going around the country and visiting the parts that had the worst cases of violence. One area got so bad that they burned a church. Now 140,000 people are living in homeless camps, all through out the country. The camps are infested with diseases such as malaria, diarrhea and dysentery disease. The President and Prime Minister are trying their best to make everything come back to normal. Prime Minister Raila Odinga Kenya is not right now in a dictatorship. President Mwai Kibaki was democratically elected as President. "We do not want you people to continue living here and suffering," - President Mwai Kibaki "We are here as leaders... We can solve all the problems in order for peace to exist," -Prime Minister Raila Odinga

  3. The life expectancy for Kenyan woman is 57 years old. The expectancy for Kenyan men is 56 years old. The infant mortality rate is 56.01 deaths1,000 live births. More than 150,000 people have died because of HIV/AIDS per year. Another 1.2 people are living with HIV/AIDS. Anyone living in Kenya right now has a high risk of catching any of these diseases. Bacterial and protozoal diarrhea, hepatitis A, and typhoid fever. They also can get malaria, schistosomiasis and AIDS. HIV/AIDS

  4. Kenya is not landlocked, it has a coastline. The equator runs right through the middle of the country. The climate of Kenya is hot and humid along the coastline and the Great Rift Valley. It is also very hot and dry in the Northeastern desert region. Kenya has lots of mountains, valleys and plateaus. It is also covered in grass lands and rain forests. Physical features Some of Kenya’s major environmental issues and natural hazards are as follows. There are recurring droughts in the dry seasons. In the rainy season there are a lot of flooding. Also there is a lot of water pollution from industrial wastes. There is also soil erosion, and poaching.

  5. Cultural Features The two official languages spoken in Kenya are English, and Kiswahili. There are more than three languages spoken in Kenya. The literacy rate in all of Kenya is everyone 15 and over can read and write. The United Kingdom once owned Kenya. Kenya became an independent country on December 12th 1963 “Teaching is my talent. My life is also difficult. My family is also displaced. But these kids should not stop learning because of the unrest.” There are over 37,953,838 people living in Kenya right now. There are also 42 different ethnic groups. Protestant 45%, Roman Catholic 33%, Muslim 10%, Indigenous beliefs 10%.

  6. The percentage of population living in poverty is about 50% of the population. That was only from 2003. The percentage has definitely changed since the recent riots. Now about 140,000 people are homeless just from that one event. Kenya owes about 7.715 million dollars to other countries. “We received leaflets warning us to leave or die.” The average salary per year of a working Kenyan in U.S. dollars is about $1,600. Some of the Natural resources/raw materials that Kenya has are as follows. Consumer goods, (Plastic, furniture, soap, clothing) Agricultural products, tourism, oil refining, steel, lead, cement, commercial ship repair, and horticulture. Economic Features

  7. Outbreak in Rioting "My mother was attacked by men with machetes. I didn't see it - when I arrived, there was only blood on the floor." Over 900 people have been killed since the elections. “They have no home, no money, and only a promise of future peace from feuding politicians.” “They’ve talked about seeing their parents being killed- they’ve seen people being shot, houses being burnt, even people being burnt alive. It’s been a traumatizing experience for them.” -Red Cross worker “If you are not a Kikuyu, they just kill you immediately.” “It is really disgusting. People are being killed and burnt in their houses, even one person was buried alive... Buried alive? And other people are just watching.”
