CHALLENGES • Diffusion of Educational Networks –voice, video, data • Centered on STATE organization and sponsorship • No technical standardization • Wide array of organizational approaches • Various stages of development • VERY little interstate activity – missed opportunities? • Little coordinated data

  12. OPPORTUNITY • Common, overlapping challenges and benefits • STAR School funding • Growing Interest for cooperation between several national organizations • Rapid pace of technological change • E-Rate and other initiatives fostering new dialogue

PURPOSE of SWN Project • To gather, record and disseminate the collective experience • To begin a national dialogue about future development and operation. • Review the processes driving the development of educational networks (past) • Identify common problems and challenges (present) • Identify and discuss visions for the future
