Presentation Transcript

  1. Translations • Sliding Congruent Figures

  2. Vocabulary • Transformation • Translation • Reflection • Rotation • Image • A change of position, shape, or size of a figure • Sliding a figure • Flipping a figure • Turning a figure • The figure you get after a transformation

  3. A Couple things! NOTATION • A point is written as an ordered pair, along with the letter it will be labeled with. • In the new image, the letter will be kept the same, but with an apostrophe • point A becomes point A’ • The rule of change can be written in an ordered pair so you know how the figure is moving left to right (according to x) and up and down (according to y) • for example: if I am moving 3 to the right and one down, I would write it (x+3, y-1)

  4. Translate triangle ABC to the right 6, and down 4. • Notation: (x+6, y-4) A: (-2, 3) (-2+6, 3-4) (4, -1) B: (-2, 1) (-2+6, 1-4) (4, -3) C: (-5, 1) (-5+6, 1-4) (1, -3)

  5. You Try It! Graph the points S (-5,4), T(1,4), U(2, 1), V(-4, 1) • Write the rule AND graph each translation from its original location • down 6 units • left 2 units • left 3 units, up 4 units • right 1 unit, down 3 units

  6. Reflections • Flipping Congruent Figures

  7. Reflections • Reflection • Line of reflection • Flipping a figure • The line that the figure is rotated around (rotated about)

  8. Example 1 • Triangle AEY is rotated over the line y= -1 • Draw in the line of reflection • Find the new vertices

  9. Example 2 • The vertices of triangle RST are R(0,4), S(0,0), T(-4,0). Graph triangle RST • Reflect it over the y-axis • R’, S’, T’ • Reflect the image over the x-axis • R”, S”, T”

  10. Copy this figure, then reflect it 180 degrees about the origin origin
