  1. Marriage and the Family Grade 8 Chapter 19

  2. The two vocations of love are marriage, and virginity or celibacy. Marriage is the vocation specific to human love. • Marriage is ordered to the creation of new life. Therefore, spouses must be open to the gift of life, of having children.

  3. Marriage is ordered to the unity of the spouses. This unity must be exclusive and lifelong. The bond of this unity is the mutual love and support of the husband and wife. Marital unity requires the sacrifice of independence by the individual spouses for the greater good – the family. • The unity of marriage is a unity of body and soul. Bodily unity is expressed in conjugal love.

  4. The first miracle of Jesus was at the Wedding at Cana. The marriage was blessed by Christ’s presence. When a baptized man and woman unite in Matrimony, they receive from Christ the graces they need to live this life. The husband and wife help each other grow closer to Christ and are dedicated to each other’s sanctification. • Sacramental marriage is indissoluble until death.

  5. A husband and wife form a new community: a family. • The obligations of marriage include openness to life, caring for children, and raising children in the faith. • Children are bound by filial piety. Filial piety requires children to honor their parents, their siblings, and authorities placed over them by their parents.
