  3. Average price of an Automobile • The average price of an automobile in the 1980’s was $10, 000. • What do you think it is now? • 2013 Honda Civic $18,000 • 2013 Ford Explorer $30,000

  4. To Buy or Not • Should teenagers buy a vehicle? Why or Why not? • WANT: • Makes you independent • Saves you time in getting from one place to another • Makes you feel more mature and responsible • Going places is fun • NEED: • How close to home are the places that you go to? School, Work, Friends • How do you get there now? • How much access is there to public transportation? • Is there a family vehicle? How much access do you have to it?

What should you consider? • Cost • Can you afford it? • Purchase Price, fuel, oil, maintenance, repairs, insurance, licensing, registration, tolls, and parking • How does owning a car affect your schedule? • You will need to earn money to pay for the car and expenses. Will working hours take away from studying, socialization, extra-curricular activities. • Are you mature enough to handle the responsibilities? • Wants vs Needs, do you understand all the costs (time and money), can you handle the stress?

  6. Safety Features • Navigation • Back up Camera • Airbags • Head rests • Seat Belts

  7. Maintenance • Bulbs – Head lights, Tail lights, Blinkers, Brake lights • Oil Change – every 3 months or 3,000 miles • Brakes • Tires – Air pressure, Rotate • Wipers

  8. Buy vs Lease • Buy – Pay entire cost of the vehicle • Finance Options • Lease – pay a portion of the vehicle’s cost • Depreciation Value *Monthly Cost is much less but you will have nothing to show for it (like renting)*

Other Costs • Registration • Insurance • Age (under 25 - more expensive) • Driving record • Miles per year you drive • Where you live • How you drive to work (car pool) • Gender (men drive more often) • Marital status • Value of vehicle (more expensive the car, the more insurance cost) • Type of car (sport car vs. sedan) • Driver education course
