  3. Sportsmanship Basic Principle Competitors in the sport of sailing are governed by a body of rules that they are expected to follow and enforce. A fundamental principle of sportsmanship is that when competitors break a rule they will promptly take a penalty, which may be to retire.

  4. 17.2 Last Rites Situation 17.2 Except on a beat to windward, while a boat is less than two of her hull lengths from a leeward boat or a boat clear astern steering a course to leeward of her, she shall not sail below her proper course unless she gybes.

About to Round Situation 2008 Blue: In zone, clear ahead, tactical rounding Yellow: About to Round and hoping to break the overlap with red before entering the zone Red: Cannot push yellow higher, currently has an inside overlap on yellow and green. Is red about to round? Green: Expecting to gain an overlap with yellow before the zone thinking that the overlap will provide them some sort of rights. About To Round Two Length Zone

Three Boat Length Zone About to Round Hello 2009 Blue: In the zone, clear ahead, tactical rounding Yellow: In the zone, must keep clear of red (a result of the overlap), entered the zone clear ahead of green. Red: Cannot sail above proper course, will be required to gybe at the mark. Green: Get in line, are heard claiming an overlap with yellow due to the their overlap with red. Three Length Zone

  7. Mark-Room Mark-Room Room for a boat to sail to the mark, and then room to sail her proper course while at the mark. However, mark-room does not include room to tack unless the boat is overlapped to windward and on the inside of the boat required to give mark-room.

  8. Gate Rounding What rights does Green have? When does Blue need to gybe? 18.4 Gybing When an inside overlapped right-of-way boat must gybe at a mark to sail her proper course, until she gybes she shall sail no further from the mark than needed to sail that course.. Rule 18.4 does not apply at a gate mark.

  9. Zones have been removed from the game for Obstructions. This was accomplished by creating a separate rule for passing Obstructions. 18 Mark-Room 19 Room to Pass an Obstruction Obstructions If Blue ducks Yellow does Green have the option of squeezing between Yellow and Blue? What is an obstruction while racing? 18 Rounding and Passing Marks and Obstuctions 18.2 (b) Overlapped at the Zone If boats were overlapped before either of them reached the two-length zone and the overlap is broken after one of them has reached it, the boat that was on the outside shall continue to give the other boat room. If the outside boat becomes clear astern or overlapped inside the other boat, she is not entitled to room and shall keep clear. Obstruction An object that a boat could not pass without changing course substantially, if she were sailing directly towards it and one of her hull lengths from it. An object that can be safely passed on only one side and an area so designated by the sailing instructions are also obstructions. However, a boat racing is not an obstruction to other boats unless they are required to keep clear of her, give her room or she is capsized, anchored, aground or helping a person or vessel in danger.
