  2. What is the Immune System? The Immune system is an organism that protects the body against any disease. Any disturbance with the immune system can cause cancer, inflammation of any sort, or irregular immune response of the body against a substance. Like an allergy for example. Pathogens (invaders) are something such as a substance or an organism that causes disease.

  4. Four Ways to Transmit Infectious Diseases Direct Contact- shaking hands or sharing the same water bottle. Indirect Contact- being near a sick person that is sneezing or coughing with out covering the mouth and nose area. Water and Food- eating eggs or meats that are not cooked well enough or uncooked. Animal Bites- an animal that has bitten you and it carry's rabies and virus.

  5. First Line of Defence The skin and linings of the interior body is the first line of defence. Pathogens are constantly attacking the body so the skin stops most of them from entering the body. Sweat and oil on the skin is slightly acidic, so it helps to prevent some pathogens from growing on the surface of the body.

  6. Other Facts of the First Line of Defence Acidic gastric juice is another defence which is in the lining on the stomach. It can destroy pathogens that enter the stomach. Mucus and cilia in the nose prevents the pathogens to enter the respiratory system.

  8. Second Line of Defence To destroy the invaders (pathogen) that enter the body is the second line of defence. The response to destroy the invaders is based on the ability to differentiate between the cells that are supposed to be in the body and the cells that don’t belong in the body.

  10. Innate Immune Response The innate immune response attacks anything that seems as a threat. It responds to all threats the same. It is one of the two third line defences. It attacks the infection and causes a fever, swelling or redness in the arena. The swelling and redness is called inflammation. Swelling and redness is called inflammation. There is an increased amount of blood cells called phagocytes, that is a result of the attacks.

  11. Acquired Immune Response Acquired Immune Response is the other third line of defence. An antigen is a non-living particle or substance. It is a substance that the body cannot recognize. The immune system mounts an acquired immune response in two ways.

  13. B Cells This is the first way the immune system mounts an acquired immune response. B cells recognize the antigens and then produce specific particles called anitbodies. They attach and destroy antigens and pathogens carrying antigens. Than the body produces more B cells to kill more antigens.

  15. T Cells This is the second way the immune system mounts an acquired immune response. White blood cells recognizes the antigen and signals a cell called the T cell. The T cell that becomes activated calls on the B cell to destroy the antigen.
