  2. Rules - Procedures • You will be given a packet of prices and an envelope. • Don’t not open the envelope until we say or else • The envelope has the questions. • We will all start together.

  3. The team to finish first with the most correct answers wins. • Bring the paper up here to Jee for her to number. • Others will grade them. • The prizes are for 3 DVDs • Wall Street with Michael Douglas and Charlie Sheen

  4. Background • YTD % CHG = Year to Date % change • 52 week HI and LO • Stock name or abbreviation • Div = Dividend • YLD % = Dividend yield (div/price) • PE= Price to Earnings • Vol 100s = volume in 100s • Close = Closing price • NET CHG = net change from the previous price

  5. Treasury Note • Like a bond • You buy it now at a price and receive a par value later. • What? Pay $95 and get $100 in 10 years with interest payments to you along the way. • No risk of default. U.S. Govt backed. • The yield on a treasury note is a measure of your return. 3%

  6. Index • A collection of stocks under one name with a price • Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA • Nasdaq • Each have their own prices and percentage changes. • Helpful to compare the stock to the index it is in.

  7. Commodity / Futures • Commodities - Gold, beef, coffee, natural gas, wheat. • The price changes in the futures market. • The Futures Contract is just an agreement to purchase the item in a certain amount at a certain price. • For our purposes, the contracts are bought and sold for profit.

  8. Commodity / Futures Contract Producers - the person or company actually producing the good sells futures contracts to lock in a predetermined price. If a producer is successful in selling futures contract to a consumer then they do not need to worry about price fluctuations. For example, a farmer decides in April to produce 100,000 bushels of corn for the summer. He believes that the price for corn is fairly high and would be very happy if he got that price during harvest time in September. Each corn futures contract is for 5,000 bushels, so to lock in at this price the farmer sells 20 corn futures contacts with a delivery date in August.

  9. More Futures Consumers - Imagine you were a company that cans corn. You buy raw material from a farmer, wash it, can it, and send it to grocery stores. You want to lessen any price risk throughout the summer months, to do this you would buy a futures contact to lock-in at the current futures price, any fluctuations in the spot price would not matter.

  10. Legal Insider Trading The SEC considers insiders to be company directors, officials, or any individual with a stake of 10% or more in the company. Currently, insiders are required to report their insider transactions within two business days of the date the transaction occurred
