  1. Catalyst Turn to page NC 34 in the textbook. For 2 the careers on these pages, answer the following questions: What do they study? What information do they use for their jobs? What level of education do you need?

  2. What is Earth Science? • Objective: EEn.0.0.1 Explain the goal of Earth System Science • EEn.0.0.1.A. Explain how geology, oceanography, astronomy and meteorology contribute to Earth System Science. • EEn.0.0.1.B. Illustrate and describe Earth’s four major spheres • EEn.0.0.1.C. Describe the two energy sources that power the Earth system.

  5. Draw a picture of a scientist. What does a scientist look like? What kinds of materials do scientists use? Where does a scientist work?

  6. Pair & Share: • Partner A has 1 minute to describe and explain their drawing. • Then switch. • Partner B has 1 minute to describe and explain their drawing.

  12. Geology • Geology: the study of the Earth • includes both physical geology (studying the materials that make up the earth) and historical (understanding of earth’s long history)

  13. Oceanography Oceanography: study of the composition and movements of sea water, coastal processes, seafloor topography and marine life.

  14. Meteorology Meteorology is the study of the atmosphere and the processes that produce weather and climate

  15. Astronomy Astronomy is the study of the universe.

Earth’s spheres • Earth’s parts can be thought of as four major spheres: • Hydrosphere: water portion of our planet. • Atmosphere: gaseous envelope. • Geosphere: below the ocean and atmosphere; made up of the core, mantle & crust. • Biosphere: all living things on earth; interacts with the physical environment.

  17. The Earth system is powered by energy from two sources: • The sun • Earth’s core

  18. The Sun • Weather and climate, ocean circulation, and erosional processes are driven by energy from the sun.

  19. Earth’s Core • There is heat that remains form the time Earth formed and the decay of radioactive elements. • These sources power the processes that produce volcanoes, earthquakes and mountains.

  21. Hydrosphere Brainstorm: Where are all the places we can find water on our planet? What picture could we draw to represent the hydrosphere?

  22. Atmosphere Brainstorm: What things make up our atmosphere and the air we breathe? What picture could we draw to represent the atmosphere?

  23. Geosphere Brainstorm: What do you think the Earth looks like beneath the surface? What picture could we draw to represent the geosphere?

  24. Biosphere • Brainstorm: How many different kinds of living things can you think of? • How do you think they interact with each other? • What picture could we draw to represent the geosphere?

  25. Exit Ticket What is Earth Science? What 4 sciences make up the “Earth Science” group? Sketch the 4 spheres of the Earth system. Include a title for each box. How does the Earth’s core power the Earth system?
