  1. 7 Menstrual Hygiene Tips You Should Be Following Menstrual cycle is a deep and integral part of every girl's life and yet most women are not aware of the basic menstrual hygiene routine. It’s important that we break the shell and start talking about menstruation in open to promote women's health and wellbeing. People are gradually becoming more vocal about menstruation in India. Women realize the importance of good menstrual hygiene practices and how it directly impacts one's health and way of life. Menstruation is a natural process, and it’s essential that we talk about it openly to create awareness about the right menstrual hygiene practices in young girls and women. Information and awareness can help empower girls to take charge of their lives and recognize menstruation as a gift and not an obstacle or problem. Some key practices that will ensure that you have a healthy and happy period are: 1. Sanitary Napkins or Tampons - Choose what’s best for you There are a number of sanitary products available in the market today like sanitary pads, tampons, etc. Check all the available options and use the products that you find most comfortable and safe. Most sanitary napkins brands share all product information on their website. Read it well and also discuss experiences with friends. Each brand is distinct, so try out a few options and then decide on the one that you find the best. Especially girls with sensitive skin, should be more mindful and choose fragrance-free products that are gentle on the skin. 2. Changing pads or tampons Wearing a napkin for a long time exposes you to infections and rashes, so change your sanitary napkin frequently. On heavy flow days, you will need to change the napkin more frequently than on the light days. Ideally, napkins should be changed every 3-4 hours, and even the best sanitary pads brands should not be used for more than 6 hours. Tampons too should be changed every 4-8 hours. When using tampons match the tampon absorbency to your menstrual flow. For example, if you have a normal flow do no go for high absorbency tampon, select normal. This is vital to avoid Toxic Shock Syndrome. There are Light, Normal, and Super Tampons as per their absorbency level, pick the right kind that matches to your menstrual flow. 2. 3. Washing hands Wash your hands with soap after changing your sanitary napkin or tampon. It's ideal to wash hands before changing the tampon/napkin too. 4. Stay clean Take a bath to stay clean and fresh. A warm bath also gives relief from menstrual aches and cramps. Though your vagina is a self-cleaning organ, it’s good to wash it with water. You do not need to use soap as it can disturb the vaginal pH balance and cause irritation and infections. Simply cleaning with water is all that is needed. 5. Cleaning the private parts Always wipe the genitals from front to back to avoid infections. Doing it the other can increase the chances of bacteria entering into your vaginal area. 6. Discard napkin/tampon properly Never try to flush the sanitary product down the toilet as it can clog the drainage pipes. Wrap the soiled napkin or tampon carefully in the product wrapper or newspaper, only then discard it in the bin. Not disposing of the soiled products correctly can pose serious health threats to the sanitation workers. 7. Stay comfortable and clean Wear clean underwear and go for cotton panties rather than synthetic ones. Synthetic wear should be avoided as it can increase the incidence of rashes and infections. Avoid jeans and tight clothing, dress up in loose comfortable clothing during your period days. Hope you find these tips useful and effectively apply them in your life for smooth and trouble- free periods. Always look out for information on various sanitary products like tampons and sanitary napkins online to keep abreast of the new and improved features. This way you get the best product for your period needs. And talk to your girlfriends about menstruation and challenges that revolve around it. Together we can come up with solutions to deal with the menstrual problems, and make the monthly cycle an easy and comfortable affair.
