  1. 3.4.4 Examining & Maintaining Bulk Plant Hoses Examining and maintaining bulk plant hoses is essential to the safe and efficient operation of the propane bulk plant. • In this module you will learn to identify: • DOT regulations relating to propane hose standards • procedures for examining and maintaining bulk plant hoses

DOT Regulations Relating to Propane Hoses 49 CFR §180.416(g)(1) states the operator must not transfer product if any of the following hose defects are discovered. • Damage to the hose cover that exposes the reinforcement • Wire braid reinforcement that has been kinked or flattened so as to permanently deform the wire braid • Soft spots when not under pressure, bulging under pressure, or loose outer covering • Damaged, slipping, or excessively worn couplings • Loose or missing bolts or fastenings on bolted hose coupling assemblies. Refer to paragraph 49 CFR §180.416(f) for hose repair, retest and placement back into service.

  4. Examining & Maintaining Bulk Plant Hoses All delivery hose assemblies are required to be permanently marked with a unique identification number as of July 1, 2000. Plant hoses fall under this requirement as they are replaced. Check for the presence of the hose rejection criteria daily; examine hoses monthly, applying these steps :

  6. Examining & Maintaining Bulk Plant Hoses Notes: Localized defects may be cut out and serviceable portions of the hose put back in service. However, the repaired delivery hose assembly must be tested in conformance with 49 CFR 180:416(f), with the month and year of the test permanently marked on the hose assembly and should be done by hose manufacturer representatives only due to hazards associated with the hose pressure test requirement of 420 psig pressure. A hose subjected to unusual abuse, such as stretching, kinking, or flattening by a vehicle, shall be removed from service immediately.
