  2. Let’s take a look at what students have done by grade level… We try to coordinate our projects with what the students are learning in their classrooms.

  3. KINDERGARTEN Let’s begin with

  4. We focus on colors, shapes, lines, composition and different media…

  5. as well as improving motor skills and learning new art vocabulary.

  6. It’s also about exploring…

  7. and having fun!

  8. FIRST GRADE First graders work more with different tools and media…

  9. and the emphasis is on: repetition, pattern, geometric shapes and texture.

  10. Reading and telling stories is important at this level.

  11. A drawing is another way to tell a story.

  12. SECOND GRADE Awareness of self and community is emphasized…

  13. as well as the difference between reality and fantasy.

  14. They are exposed to art history and different cultures.

  15. Positive and negative space and still-life drawing are explored.

  16. Second graders are naturally very creative.

  17. THIRD GRADE Third graders use a variety of media and techniques.

  18. Research and personal interests are encouraged.

  19. Fables and myths are explored.

  20. The study of nature and illustration techniques are emphasized.

  21. By third grade, students are better at organizing their projects.

  22. FOURTH GRADE Fourth graders learn that art is a multi-step process…

  23. and they learn how to better organize their ideas.

  24. They learn to recognize different art styles and cultures.

  25. FIFTH GRADE Fifth graders integrate different media and techniques.

  26. They use all the skills they’ve learned to improve their projects.

  27. They organize elements into a successful composition.

  28. As fifth graders head to middle school, I hope they will continue to enjoy art.
