Three Parts to an Introductory Paragraph: • Hook • This is usually your opening sentence or two • The purpose is to introduce your essay in a way that will grab the reader’s attention Ex.: I was about 11 when I first encountered Shakespeare; I was 13 when I fell in love with my first piece of art work. Was I a cultured kid in an art program? No. I just played a lot of classic video games.

  3. Three Parts to an Introductory Paragraph: • Main Points • It is important to give your reader a road map of where your essay is going. For this reason, your introduction should preview your essay’s main points. Ex.: Classic video games are an excellent opportunity to introduce children to art, they give students a fun way to practice reading, and they invite young gamers to exercise their imaginations in ways that worksheets and lectures simply do not.

  4. Three Parts to an Introductory Paragraph: • Thesis Statement • Usually toward the end of you paragraph, the thesis statement is a sentence in which you state the argument of your essay. Ex.: It is for these reasons that I am convinced classic video games can be an important part of children’s educational growth.
