  2. Cyber Bullying • Form of bullying that is done over the Internet • Cyber bullying can include • Hurtful messages • Websites devoted to making fun of individuals • Demeaning photographs • Cyber bullies can be people you know or don’t know.

  3. Cyber Bullying Facts • The following facts come from a survey conducted by isafe.org in 2004: • 57% of students have had someone say a hurtful thing over the Internet. • 35% of students have been threatened over the Internet. • 20% of students have received mean or threatening e-mails. • 58% who have been bullied over the Internet never told their parents about it.

  4. Cyber Bullying • Bullies cannot use physical aggression over the Internet like they can with traditional bullying. • However, cyber bullying consists of verbal abuse such as teasing, sarcasm, and name calling. • The bullies cannot see the victim they are harming, causing them to be more abusive, and more reluctant to quit.

  5. Cyber Bullying Example • An overweight high school student named Ghyslain Raza was videotaped performing Star Wars moves. • Fellow classmates took this video and uploaded it to file sharing software. • It was downloaded by many people. • Raza was made fun of constantly at his school and everywhere he went.

  6. Cyber Bullying • Cyber bullying can occur in three different ways: • Chat Rooms and Blogs • Children can enter chat rooms and be verbally abused by other individuals. These children can be picked on by one individual, or many can gang up on them. • E-Mail • Individuals who have a victim’s email address can constantly leave rude emails, making fun of them. • Videos • Videos of a victim can be put up on the Internet for others to see. Video conferencing can also be a medium for cyber bullying.

  7. Defense Against Bullying • Chat Rooms • Do not give your name, address, age, or any other personal information • If there is any verbal abuse, ignore it. Do not respond back. Block the chatter and log off. • Tell a parent or teacher about the verbal abuse.

  8. Defense Against Bullies • E-Mail • Do not reply to any negative emails sent to you. • If you receive an email from someone that you know is trying to bully you, do not open the email. Save the email. • Tell a parent or teacher about the incidents • Video • Videos can be taken with many new technological devices that include cell phones. • If any videos that are offensive turn up on the Internet, tell a parent or teacher. Do not respond to the bully.

  9. Cyber Bullying Resources • Here are some resources used to help individuals that have been affected by cyber bullies. • http://www.bullying.co.uk/ • A website designed to help fight cyber bullying. Includes resources for students, teachers, and parents. It also includes many articles written about cyber bullying. • http://www.netbullies.com/pages/1/index.htm • Another nice website including information on how to prevent cyber bullying. It also includes a section to report cyber bullying.
