  2. Bell ringer • At what stage of life do you think children grow the quickest? • Birth-one year old • Toddlers • Middle childhood • Pre-teens • Teenage years

Take out The Developing Child and open to page 251 • At your table split up into 3 groups • One group write “Head to foot” on the top of your piece of paper • One group write “Simple to complex” on the top of your piece of paper • One group write “Near to far” on the top of your piece of paper Under the words write at least 3 examples of each pattern of development and be prepared to explain it to your groups. Write down the notes

  4. Weight • In the first six babies gain 1-2 pounds a month • The average one year old is about 20-22lbs • Weight gain is a sign of good health

  5. Height • The average newborn is 20 inches • By one year the average infant is 30 inches Sight • An infants vision is blurry at first • Babies prefer the color red and high contrast • By month two babies demonstrate depth perception and hand eye coordination

  6. Hearing • Hearing develops before birth • They respond to the tone of the voice, rather then the words • A soothing loving voice calms them • A loud or angry voice alarms them

  7. Smell • Within 10 minute baby can distinguish their mothers smell from another peoples Taste • Babies use their mouths to explore • They put EVERYTHING and anything in their mouth • What issues could this cause?

  8. Voice • Babies begin babbling (Ooo’s and Ahh’s) as early as 3 months of age • Babies cry becomes more mature as they age • Babies understand many words before they are able to say them • When a baby says their first word varies, but it is usually around the 1st birthday

  9. Teeth • Primary teeth appear at about 6-7 months • Teething (the appearance of the teeth) is painful • To help offer rubber teething rings or rub an ice cube on the babies gum to ease the pain

Feeding a baby • It is recommended that a baby mainly has breast milk for the first year • When feeding a baby with a bottle, hold the baby upright in a semi tight position • Support the babies head and neck • Hold the bottle at an angle • Test the temperature of the milk on your arm before you feed it to the baby • It should feel luke warm, not hot • Throw away extra formula, bacteria can grow in left over formula

  12. Introducing new foods • After 6 months you can introduce “solids” • Baby may spit out food because it is unfamiliar • Hold the baby in a up right position • Usually cereal, then rice, then oatmeal, then fruits and veggies

  13. Weaning • Around the 1st birthday • Changing from drinking out of a bottle to drinking out of a cup

  14. Self feeding • When babies sit up, they can feed themselves using their fingers • To encourage this, provide finger foods • Cut into small pieces • Easy to break up and no chewing • Give the baby just a few pieces at a time • Stay away from peanut butter, milk, whole grapes, candy, nuts

  16. Feeding schedules • Usually about every 3-4 hours • Changes and can be unpredictable at first • The first few weeks a baby may eat 6-8 times a day • Most 1 year olds eat three meals a day and snacks

  18. Burping the baby • Burb twice after feeding • Lay the baby across your knees or • Hold the baby across your chest with the head above your shoulders • Place a cloth of your clothing when your burp the baby

  19. Shaken baby syndrome • When a baby is shaken • Can damage brain, cause learning problems, blindness or deafness What are some healthy things to do when a baby is crying?

  20. Healthy ways to deal with a crying baby when you are a frustrated parent • Put the baby down in a safe place and go to another room to calm down • Ask a friend of relative to watch the baby while you calm down • Take deep breaths Swaddling

  21. How to swaddle a baby • 1. Lay the baby on a flat surface and fold down the top-right corner about 6 inches • 2. Place your baby on his back with his head on the fold • 3. Pull the corner near your baby’s left hand across his body, and tuck the leading edge under his back on the right side under the arm • 4. Pull the bottom corner up under your baby’s chin • 5. Bring the loose corner over your baby’s right arm and tuck it under the back on his left side. If your baby prefers to have his arms free, you can swaddle him under the arms.

  22. Handling a newborn • Lifting- Slide one hand under the baby’s buttocks and the other under the shoulders. Use your forearm to support the neck and head as your raise your hands together to lift the newborn

Bathing a baby • Can’t feed right after feeding • Newborns are given a sponge bath for the first two weeks • Make sure the water is between 70-80 degrees • Remove baby’s clothes and put a towel on the baby • Wash the babies face with clear water and a soft wash cloth • Wash the rest of the baby with soap and water one area at a time • Make sure you dry all of the baby’s creases • Don’t use q tips, babies jerk and it could damage their hearing

  24. Dressing a baby • Many newborns just wear a onsey • When babies creep and crawl they need more durable clothing • Pull over garments • 1. Gather garment into a loop and slip over the back of the baby’s head • 2. Stretch the garment forward as you bring it past the forehead and nose • 3. Put the baby’s fist into the armhole and pull the arm through with your other hand. Repeat and straighten out the bottom on the garment

  25. Open front Shirt • Lay the baby face down so they are more secure • 1. Open the shirt and lay it on the baby’s back • 2. Gently turn the baby face up so that the shirt is underneath • 3. Gently put the baby’s arm through the sleeve

  26. Diapering a baby Parenting choice Cloth diapers- more eco friendly, cheaper, Disposable diapers-more convenient and expensive Young babies need their diapers changed 12 to 15 times a day

  27. Take out a piece of paper and number it 1-9 then draw two lines down the piece of paper • You will assign your partners a 1,3, or 5 on the task • Be respectful
