  2. Alliteration “Lady luck leaves Lindsay Lohan” Alliteration is a repeated sound or letter at the start of the word. What persuasive effect does using alliteration have on the reader? Alliteration draws the eye to headlines and engages the attention of the reader. Alliteration can also be used in conjunction with humour to catch the reader’s eye. Using alliteration, write an advertising slogan designed to catch the attention of the reader for a traditionallyunsellable product. Share these slogans with the class.Vote on most effective slogans.

  3. Cliché “Avoid clichés like the plague” Clichés are overused phrases which are quickly understood by the audience. What persuasive effect does using a cliché have on the reader? Because clichés are overused, readers are familiar with them and so using a cliché reassures the reader through this familiarity. This familiarity can also lull the reader into an uncritical mindset which leaves them open to suggestion and persuasion. Clichés can also have a comic effect on the tone, making an article more light-hearted or more sarcastic depending on the use. Using the list of clichés we have on the board, pair 10 clichés with anappropriate issue and write a sentence on each of those pairs, usingthat cliché.

  4. Metaphor “I am a star, shining on the silver screen” A metaphor is comparing one thing to another by saying the one thing is the other. What persuasive effect does using metaphor have on the reader? Metaphor often works on an emotional level, creating a striking image which is often more effective than simple description. Metaphors are used frequently in stories about natural disaster,war and other tragedies. Talk to the person next to you about why a metaphor would have a persuasive effect particularly whendiscussing these issues. Write two examples of a sentence describing the following picture not using metaphor and two examples of a sentence describing it using a metaphor. Compare the pair with threepeople close to you. Which metaphor was the most emotionally impacting?

  5. Generalisation “All actors are self absorbed and vain!” A generalisation is a sweeping statement which suggests that what is true for some is true for most or all. What persuasive effect does using a generalisation have on the reader? Generalisations often appeal to widely held beliefs and prejudices. It’s also sometimes paired with an emotional appeal or emotive language because, most of the time, if reason is applied, generalisations will fall apart. What are some widely held generalisationswhich are expressed in the media? Do these work?

  6. Pun “The Sapphires is a gem of a movie!” A play on word that suggests a double meaning. Often plays on a word with a similar sound but different spelling. What persuasive effect does using a pun have on the reader? A pun is often used in headlines to grab the readers attention, generally through the use of humour. There is also a likelihood that the word with the double meaning has either a positive or negative connotation. Puns are often used in the Arts and Sportssections of the paper. Write a film review or game recap headline with a pun in the title. Look through the papers provided and cut out any puns that you find. If you can’t find any within 2 minutes, find four headlines without a pun and change them to pun-filled headlinesdesigned to catch the readers eye!
