  3. Study • Literature Review • Setting & Participants • Pre- Post- Design • The Assessments • Employment Questionnaire – Appendix A • Pre-Employment Assessment – Appendix B • Tough Questions: 21, 24, 27 • Most-missed: 26, 32, 36 • The Lesson: “Honest-Best Philosophy”

  4. Results • Pre-Employment Assessment = small effect • Pre-Employment Questionnaire = large effect • 3 students (C, E & F) • C: OHI, African-American, Female • Same on assessment; increase questionnaire • E: ED, African-American, Male • Decreased on both • F: LD, Hispanic, Female • Increased both

  5. What Others Are Saying • Express Employment OKC Poll: “Work ethic/integrity” most important, college degrees are least • eHow Article • YouTube: Pre-employment Assessment Test • Bureau of Labor Statistics: “From April to July 2013, the number of employed youth 16 to 24 years old increased by 2.1 million to 19.7 million total.” Employed rates hover around 50%.

  6. Incorporating this into the IEP • Transition Pages • OKSDE Special Ed Handbook pg. 42/43 • Aim for 80% proficiency on the sample assessment • Realistic goals

  7. E&R & SE Services • E&R are less successful than SE applicants • More support and training results in better job retention • How does this translate in the classroom?

  8. Discussion • What are they really assessing? • Increased assessment use; decreased evaluation • We need quality people • We need to bring the student/applicant up – not expect employers to adapt • Your students need your help… (reality check) • What’s next?

  9. Questions? • ShawnSheehan.com • NormanTransition.com • DRTC.org • Shawn Sheehan ssheehan@norman.k12.ok.us • Akili Atkinson aatkinson@drtc.org
