  2. Ego, Id, & Superego • Freud believed that life's inner battle consisted of these three sources. • Id- Negative unconscious drives ruled by the pleasure principle • Ego- Seat of reason and coordinated inner life • Superego- Represented the inhibitions and moral values that were imposed on people by society – forced the ego to control the id.

  3. Oedipus Complex • “the childhood desire to sleep with the mother and to kill the father” • This complex is based off of the mythological story of King Oedipus who was fated to kill his father and make his mother his wife. • These “Oedipus” feelings can be repressed but can later arise in things like dreams or artistic expression.

  4. Dream Interpretations • Freud thought that dreams were a gateway to the unconsciousness that aroused people and desires, including sexual desires. • Dreams were interpreted through post dream personal experience that allowed Freud to dissect the individuals influences and find the seed that birthed the dream. • “Egotism in dreams: Freud found that many dreams had an underlying latent theme of egotism, in their self-absorption or reference to early childhood memories of being cared for, fed, etc”

  5. Sexuality • Freud studied the mind but mainly the post dramatic sexual desires that affected the actions of the individual. He believed that many mental obstructions were caused primarily by sex or the lack of sex.

  6. Contributions to Psychology • He used “talk therapy” to resolve psychological problems • Invented the therapy couch • Theories of the unconscious: repression, denial, sublimation, & projection • Oedipus Complex (female version: Electra Complex)
