Reading Skills and Concepts of the Week Comprehension Strategy: Summary [RI.5.1] • When readers summarize a story, they decide which details are most important and retell them in their own words. • Important details explain who the characters are, what the setting is , and what significant events are unfolding. Comprehension Skill: Theme [RL.5.2] • The theme of a story is the message about life, society, or human nature that the author wants to convey to readers. • The theme is usually not stated directly. • Details from the story that help readers understand the theme may be things character do, things they say or think, and things that happen to them throughout the story. Genre: Fantasy [RL.5.4] • The setting of a fantasy is made-up, or imagined • A fantasy tells about characters that could not exist and events that could not happen in real life. • A fantasy may include sensory language and figurative language, such as personification. Vocabulary Strategy:Context Clues [L.5.4a] • Students can find context clues in the same sentence as the unknown word or in nearby sentences.

  3. “ Survivaland” {pgs. 180 - 183} Close Read pg 91!!!! After about 10-15 minutes you will go back and reread certain parts of the passage to answer questions!

Page 182– What was the purpose of the onion? Page 182-183 – How did the friends solve the problem of the hungry crow? Page 183– Who was declared the winner of the game? Why? THEME – What is the theme of this story?

  5. “ Weslandia” {pgs. 198 - 211} Close Read!!!! After about 15 -20 minutes you will go back and reread certain parts of the passage to answer questions!

Page 205 – What is weird with the way Wesley’s plants or crop grows ? Page 207 – Name at least three ways Wesley uses the plants he grows? Page 208– How does Wesley’s schoolmates feel about his new civilization? What does Wesley do for his schoolmates to allow them to be apart of his new civilization? Page 208 – Name two ways this civilization has changed Wesley’s life (attitude, reputation, etc…) THEME – What is the theme of the story?

Language Arts Skills and Concepts of the Week Grammar: Verb Tenses [L.5.1c] • The tense of a verb tells when an action takes place. • Present Tense – tells what is happening now; add -s or –es to form the present tense of most verbs. • Also remember; change the y to the i and add –es when a verb ends in y. • Present Progressive Tense – shows that the action is continuing. • Past Tense- shows that the action has already happened. Add –ed to most verbs to show past tense. • Future Tense- shows that the action will happen. Formed with the helping verb will.

  8. Writing Skills and Concepts of the Week Writing: Word Choice • Good writers vary their words to cause a reader to make associations, or connections to certain emotions or ideas. • These associations are called connotations. • Writers can affect the way a reader think or feel about a subject.
