  5. Chemical Bond: What is a compound? What is a bond? What part of the atom is in charge of bonds? • Chemical bonding is the joining of atoms to form new substances. • Think making compounds. • What do compounds look like? • Chemical bond is an interactions that holds 2 atoms together. • This happens when: • Electrons are shared • Electrons are gained • Electrons are lost

Where do we find valence electrons? • How do we determine the number of electrons? • Remember: atomic number = number of protons • SO protons = electrons because atoms have NO CHARGE • Where do we find electrons? • On rings/orbitals/shells! • Valence electrons = electrons on outermost shell

  10. To Bond or to not Bond… What is a compound? What is a bond? What do periods tell us? What do groups tell us? • Remember that not all elements will bond! • Noble gases do not like to form chemical bonds because they are completely full! • REMEMBER RULE OF 8! • Elements are considered full when they have 8 electrons on the outermost ring.

  12. Pearls of Wisdom: • Chemical bonding is the joining of atoms to form new substances. A chemical bond is an interaction that holds two atoms together. • A valence electron is an electron in the outermost energy level of an atom. • Most atoms form bonds by gaining, losing, or sharing electrons until they have 8 valence electrons. Atoms of some elements need only 2 electrons to fill their outermost level.
