  1. Emily Bronte By Bethany Jennings

  2. Introduction • Emily Bronte was an English author around 1818 – 1849 • The famous novel ‘Wuthering Heights’ was written by her. • It was her only novel and written between December 1845 and July 1846. It remained unpublished until July 1847 and was not printed until December of that year.

  3. Facts about Emily Bronte While Emily and her siblings were homeschooled, they all became very close, especially she and her sister Anne. It is said that the two sisters were almost like twins, companions unable to be torn apart. Emily finally returned to school at the age of seventeen; however, after only three months, she returned home, unable to handle life away at school. After revealing their poetry to each other, Charlotte, Emily, and Anne published a collection titled Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell, pseudonyms each sister chose. Wuthering Heights, Emily’s only published novel, was not well received at first. It is now considered a classic of English literature. After Emily’s death, Charlotte, the only surviving sibling, edited Wuthering Heights and had it republished under Emily’s full name. It had previously been published under the pseudonym Ellis Bell.

  4. A bit about the book • It follows the life of Heathcliff, a mysterious gypsy-like person, from childhood (about seven years old) to his death in his late thirties. Heathcliff rises in his adopted family and then is reduced to the status of a servant, running away when the young woman he loves decides to marry another. He returns later, rich and educated and sets about gaining his revenge on the two families that he believed ruined his life. • The book is considered, one of the best of all time. •  Gothic novel (designed to both horrify and fascinate readers with scenes of passion and cruelty; supernatural elements; and a dark, foreboding atmosphere); also realist fiction (incorporates vivid circumstantial detail into a consistently and minutely thought-out plot, dealing mostly with the relationships of the characters to one another) • as well as standard english, the book also includes some Yorkshire dialect.
