  1. TCPS-Chesapeake College Early College Partnership Advanced Credit Initiative

  2. AP/DE partnership • TCPS high school students participate in Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment • Some participate in both AP and DE • New program encourages students and their parents to plan out an AP/DE package to help students earn advanced college credit

  3. AP & DE Program Highlights AP courses: • Students take AP courses, taught by HS teachers, in their high school. College credit is granted with a qualifying score on the AP test. (Each college determines the qualifying score on each AP test for the awarding of credit.) DE Courses: • Eligible HS students enroll in DE Program courses during their junior and senior years. These college courses are taught by college instructors. Students may receive “dual” (high school and college) credit for the course. A grade of “C” or better receives college credit. It will remain on their permanent college transcript. Credit granted based on test score Credit granted based on course grade

  4. TCPS AP offerings • TCPS currently offers 12 AP courses • Chesapeake offers credit for 9 of the 12 courses with ‘3’ or better AP test scores

  5. Dual Enrollment Program Criteria To participate in Dual Enrollment, students must be: • Age 16 or older • A high school junior or senior • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher • Have the written permission of the guidance counselor and parent/guardian to participate in the program every semester

  6. ChesapeakeDE Opportunities We offer: • Four courses –SP14 semester at Easton High School (8-9:15 a.m.) • HUM 101- Intro. To Humanities • COM 101- Fund. Oral Communication • PSC 150- general Psychology • SOC 161 - Sociology • Many other course offerings at the Wye Mills and Cambridge sites

  7. Sample Scenario • A student scores ‘3’ on six AP tests and ‘4’ on AP U.S. History. This earns half the credits required for a Liberal Arts & Sciences associate’s degree! • Add one DE course each semester of junior and senior year offered onsite at TCPS high schools • Take one more Gen Ed course and FSC 101in during junior & senior years of HS This student would be one semester short of an associate’s degree at HS graduation (and already qualify for Transfer Certificate).

  8. How the program works: • Chesapeake will work closely with TCPS students and Guidance Offices through all four years of students’ high school careers, and offer four DE courses per year onsite. • DE courses are meant to complement TCPS AP offerings, helping students maximize their number of potential college credits.

  9. Program Benefits • Students save time to degree • Parents save money on college education, paying 75% of regular college tuition* • Students learn about college expectations, which will pay future dividends * Tuition/fees comparison, 3-credit course: ChesapeakeSalisbury Univ.Washington College $351.25 $858 $6,853

  10. Program Features • Increased time commitment from Chesapeake admissions and advising staff • Doubling of Chesapeake’s DE offerings at EHS and early identification of course offerings so students can plan in advance • Increased transfer advising resources from Chesapeake College
