  4. Individual project hints • -Check out IP hints each week for more guidance • -Read over the rubrics for grading • -Have questions ? Ask before Sunday! • **********A NEW SET OF DATA IS USED EACH SESSION********** • If you are taking this class for a second time, submission of past work involving the data sets will result in a zero for the assignment. Your answers will be wrong since you are working with a different set of numbers. • If you procure old assignments from students or websites and use the data for your assignment, you will receive a zero because it is considered an egregious violation of the University's academic integrity policy. The case will be referred to the Office of Academic Affairs and become part of your collegiate record. In certain circumstances, you may be awarded an F for the course. • The only way to succeed in this course is to complete the assignments using the current, dataset accessible through the link in Unit 1 on the assignment list. If you have a question or need clarification, please contact your instructor. • **********A NEW SET OF DATA IS USED EACH SESSION********** • A pdf of the academic honesty policy may be found in the instructor files portion of the course I encourage you to read it and let me know if you have any questions.

  6. Field Trip time! • -Check out proflmurray.webs.com • -Your source for all things BUSN 311!!!!!

  7. Why is this class so important? • -numbers drive so many decisions in business! • -Data is collected and analyzed continuously in business to drive change and improvement • -surveys • -observation • - recycled data • - design of experiments • Data collection is a continuously evolving field

  8. What is the goal of statistics • AFTER you gather the data you must organize it so that it is meaningful • Which is more meaningful?

  9. Types of Data • Quantitative • Measures a quantity or numerical aspect • Height, Weight, Number of pets • Qualitative • May be numerical however numbers do not have numerical meaning • Zip code, phone number, student ID number, codes

  10. Measures of Central Tendency • Mean • Sum of the data divided by number of data points • Not Robust to outliers • Median • Middle data point when data is in order • Robust to outliers • Mode • Most frequent data point • Can have more than one or none

  11. Measures of Dispersion • Tell How spread out the data is • Measure of Consistency • Range • Largest Data point-smallest data point • Standard Deviation • The larger the standard deviation the more spread out the data is • This is calculated in excel Mean=75 Standard deviation=2 Mean=75 Standard deviation=12

  12. Which statistics can I use?? • Qualitative variables- the number has no meaning therefore descriptive statistics have no meaning • Mean, Median, • Standard Deviation, Variance Mode

  13. SO WHAT DO I DO FOR MY IP???? • CHOOSE ONE QUALITATIVE (GENDER OR POSISTION) AND ONE QUANTIATIVE (INTRINSIC OR EXTRINSIC) • EXPLAIN WHY YOU CHOSE THEM • CALCULATE APPROPRIATE DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS FOR EACH COLUMN • EXPLAIN DIFFERENCE IN QUALITATIVE AND QUANITATIVE VARIABLES • WHAT TYPES OF DESCRIPTIVE STATS ARE APPROPRIATE FOR EACH, WHY? • CREATE APPROPRIATE GRAPH FOR EACH COLUMN • EXPLAIN WHAT YOU LEARNED • -BE SPECIFIC • - DON’T FORGET TO EXPLAIN VARIABILTY • EXPLAIN IMPORTANCE OF CHARTS AND GRAPHS • INCLUDE REFERENCES AND CITATIONS • INCLUDE TITLE PAGE, ABSTRACT AND INTRODUCTION BE SURE TO CHECK OUT THE UNIT 1 IP HINTS!!
